45 Long Colt Carry Ammo

Anybody know where I can find some carry ammo for a Ruger Vaquero?

Only place I've been able to find somthing other than cowboy ammo was a little pawn shop in rural America. They had CCI Blazer 200gr JHP so I picked up a couple of boxes, but I don't know anything about this ammo and can't find anything much about it. Otherwise I've not been able to find anybody that carries any kind of JHP for the 45 Colt.

Try winchester, they have some 225grn silvertips for personal defense. http://www.winchester.com/products/index_chgun.html

You can also try Cor-bon, they offer some as well I believe. http://www.corbon.com/ammo.html

If you can not find the ammo locally, I am sure that you could find a merchandiser online to help you. I think you might be able to order directly from Cor-bon, but check it out before you quote me.

Hope this Helps

Hornady XTP comes in 300 grain JHP. However, I've only reloaded that and not purchased any.

Do you reload? Maybe at a gun show. Or if you've got a friend that reloads you can purchase the componets and let him load you some up. As a favor of course.

Just out of curiosity, are you going to carry a Vaquero concealed? I have one and love it but it is a little big, bulky and not too quick into action from a concealed draw. :)

Let me know and maybe I'll start carrying mine too.

Best of luck

DaHaMac,

Thanks for the links, will try and find some locally or if all fails try the ammo dealers on line. Silvertips would also look "kool" in the cartridge belt ammo loops :) :)

SKS, yep I reload but do not want to carry reloads for personal protection due to problems in court.

I'm getting involved with CAS and when dressing up in period costume the Vaquero will be part of my get up. It's just plain stupid to me not to load the Vaquero when carrying it. I've got a CCW but open carry here is fine and dandy so while everybody can see it to them it will be part of the "costume" instead of what it really is.

My daily carry gun is a customized government 1911 with hydro-shoks.

I understand the legal aspect of not wanting to carry with reloads. They could view that as pre planned killing.

My Dad likes the 1911 while I prefer to carry a P220 or HiPower.

Go with the Winchester 225gr. Silvertips. That's what I carry in my Model 25 Smith. Excellent round. The heavier bullets 250 & 300gr are mostly designed for hunting or hard cast lead. Much too heavy for self defense as they would whistle right through a human being without hardly slowing down.

Is that blazer loaded with the golddot bullet?....if it is it will do fine. Ive several boxes left of blazer in 44spl gold dot for my 44mag mountain revolver....fubsy.

you may want to try the Federal 225 grain soft lead hollowpoint. it is very accurate and looking at one it does not take much imagination to figure what one would do to an attacker. i really like this load for smaller or short barrel guns as it is a standard pressure load for the .45 Colt and with a soft lead hollowpoint bullet it does not take much velocity to promote expansion.

As Grayfox says, go with Winchester Silvertip HP. The last time I bought this cartridge, it was sold in 20-round boxes that should still be readily obtainable.

Sivertip is definitely still available, I just bought a box about 3 or 4 weeks ago for use in my Winchester Trapper. If I had a pistol in .45 Colt, I'd use the same for defensive purposes. I've shot the Federal load, too, but prefer jacketed to lead.
What I'd really like to find is some Triton Quik-Shok.
