.45 going AUTO?

In some of the threads dealing with AD's, I've come across a number of stories dealing with .45s (usually of the 1911 variety) malfunctioning and going full auto.

What's the cause of this? Did the sear slip or something?

Yeah, this can happen.
I had one do it. It was an Old GI Issue unit. It went Full Auto on me. Think a 3 round burst - as the mag was almost empty...
I gave it the the armorer and never did find out just what caused it.
This isnt something you WANT to happen.
It is uncontrollable, and very very dangerouse. You see - when you take the finger off the trigger - you want the gun to STOP firing.

I believe the two main causes of .45s going full auto is a sticking firing pin, or the disconnector failing.

When I first got my Series 70 Gold Cup in
the mid 80's, the first mag went full auto TWICE. Right out of box. If it hadn't quit after 2 rds, it actually was quite neat. The holes were 1/2" apart!
What a defense gun! Ba-dap! 2 rds in almost same hole. heh.
It was from the trigger stop screw being too tight. Backed off and it was ok from then on.
