45 Colts in a Ruger SRH .454 Casull

I read about the Freedom Arms .454 Casulls that if you fire 45 Colt loads then you should be sure to clean the cylinder thoroughly before firing any more .454 Casull loads because you can ring a cylinder. Does this also apply to Ruger and Taurus .454 Casulls? I have some 45 Colt ammo here but havent tried it yet. What brush is good for the cylinder on a .454 Casull? Is the .45 cal brash brush that comes in a cleaning kit fine? I either use it or a .410 brush now but if I fire the 45 Colt loads I want to be sure I get everything good and clean before firing the full power Casull loads again.

Yes, the colt cases are shorter than the .454 IIRC, since the .454 is a lengthed .45 colt..

This prevents build up, which would make it really hard to chamber .454 rounds..

I've fired a ton of .45 Colt in my 9 1/2 inch SRH. I clean the weapon after firing, and it's never caused me a problem.

A buddy shoots cowboy action with a .45 Schofield. He loads Schofield ammo by the ton on a Dillon 1050. He's fired many thousands of rounds of them in both his SRH and his Freedom Arms SA , again, with no problems.

The secret to any gun, and any ammo, is simple. CLEAN THE DARN THING REGULARLY!! :p

I clean it after every shooting session. I think maybe I worry about things too much :) I'll just make sure not to shoot any .454 loads after I've shot some 45 Colts and I"ll just clean it good at home.

It also bears mention that the same is true for 44 spl. to 44 mag. or 38 spl. to 357 mag. What the ring may cause, other than making it difficult to load, is a sharp spike in pressure in the magnum round that you are firing, possibly damaging the gun or, worse, the shooter. Keep your guns clean and stay safe

I guess that's the advantage of having a Ruger Blackhawk Bisley in 45ACP/45 Colt. It came with the extra cylinder. :)

Whats up folks this is my first post here and I find a topic very near and dear to my heart. I spend alot of my shooting time with a 454 in my hand andI have shot both my 45 Colt practice load and 454 loads in the same shooting session. The build up thing hasnever been a problem but I usaully wipe the gun out both barrel and cylinder a time or two during each session. One important thing to take note of as one writter has already posted this same problem can occur anytime you use the short parent case in a longer chamber. But my advice is load up and shoot up and enjoy. By the way if you would like I will share with you my 454 practice load forwhich 45 Colt cases are perfect.

As already mentioned, same principal as when firing .38/.357--- .44spcl/.44mag. Propper maintenance to prevent ringing the cylinder bores is all that's required...

well I did it today. I shot a box of 45 Colt loads, I actually didnt even take the Casull loads along so as to force myself into using the 45 Colt loads :)

I was quite surprised. Recoil wasnt nearly as much and the accuracy was still very good. The only thing is, they were filty. They were Winchester Cowboy Loads in a tan colored box of 50. I really scrubbed the gun tonight after I got home. Looks as good as new, and the cylinders and barrel are both back to being nice and shiny :D

Though recoil was less, I still like the full power Casull loads more.
