45 Colt rifle accuracy

While it is probably true that I've never owned a gun that limited my marksmenship, my Uberti 45 Colt does seem to be a challenge. With a 30" barrel my cast bullet accuracy at 50 yards is nothing noteworthy. Is this typical of this cartridge or just my poor marksmenship?

Ken,

What kind of groups are you getting? Are you shooting offhand, or from the bench? I would expect 2-3" groups from the bench at that distance.

I have a Uberti that will do under an 1" off bags with a 230 gr flat nose lead bullet (all into the same hole if I work on it). It has a Shilen match barrel screwed on to the 1873 reciever. I would be surprised if it wouldn't do 2" at 100 yards from a good rest.

Six inches @ 50 yard off hand isn't bad shooting but with good ammo I suspect your rifle will do much better from a rest, as would you.

The rest is just more practice ;)

The 45 Colt can be every bit as accurate as ANY handgun round out there.

What Dane said. Especially when working up a load, you want to shoot from the bench. That way, you can take as many variables out of the equation as possible.
