.45 Colt 225 grain SJSP & Semi-Wadcutter HP @ 810 FPS -- Effective Self-defense???

If that doesn't get the attention of the BGs nothing will ! That's the basic weight and velocity of the 45acp but with a better shaped bullet .Fine for SD with reasonable recoil .

Either of those loads will be good for deer or hogs out to about 50 yards or so depending on the shooters ability. Both are suitable for self defense. Personally I'd have a bit more confidence in the LSWC. I'm not sure which SJSP you are referring to, but likely it would do the job.

A 255 grain lead SWC at 900 fps from a .45 Colt will shoot through a deer at 100 yards like so much wind.

Can't imagine with the slightly lighter weight and slightly less velocity of the bullet that it wouldn't make a great SD and general light use load. That's a fairly heavy bullet as far as SD goes, so it doesn't need to be all that fast.

It's fine and dandy. Good weight, good shape, and good velocity (but I'd prefer 900 fps myself.)

Now just make sure you can shoot fast and strait with that load.

I would feel good carrying that load in one of my 1911 45s. As long as the feed flawlessly through my gun I wouldn't have any quams about them.

basic rule for carrying is:

"As long as what you are carry, begins with a "4" after the decimal, there will be no doubt."

Given that, it still comes down to PLACEMENT.

Either should be good for woods carry, may want to look at the Federal "Hot Cast" lead ammo for heavy bodied critters, e.g.: bear, feral hog

What firearm using?

That particular SWCHP is probably swaged of pretty soft lead. Great for self defense but I wouldn't expect it to blow through a deer or hog.

Of course those are both great general defense loads for 45colt I'd prolly prefer the LSWC. But I use the Speer 250gr golddots in my 45ccolt chambered guns. It's loaded a little hotter than the fed loads and the bullet is like the much acclaimed 38 short barrel bullet only about double the size.
I don't know how Speer gets a 1/2" hole in the end of a .452 bullet lol

We are discussing the revolver round .45 Colt (or .45 Long Colt to some) and not the 45acp. Different critter.

The above loads are equivalent to or better than .45ACP ball(FMJ/non-expanding). The .45ACP ball load has been held up as the standard by which all other defense loads have been judged for about 100 years. They should be effective; but there is better, even if only marginally better.

very effective. with these bullets there is no real issue of poor penetration. the only real issue is expansion. most soft points or sjsp in .357 or .45 seem intended for heavy guns, like ruger only loads and cartridges like 454 casull or 460 sw. hence deformation may be minimal.

The bullets the OP is talking about should expand just fine. They were designed for standard .45 Colt velocities.

SouthernShooter:

I have not shot game with my Smith & Wesson M 25, .45 Colt but I have shot a wild boar with my Smith & Wesson Model 625, 45 auto rim. Because I was hunting with dogs I shot the boar at point blank range. The 200 grain Hornady XTP bullet loaded to 1,020 fps entered just in front of the shoulder and ranged dioganlly for about twelve inches taking out three inches of neck bone along its path. The bullet lodged just under the off side ear and just behind the boars jaw bone.
