I own several 44's but made the plunge this week and bought a blackhawk in 45 colt.My question is how do I go about getting a 45 acp cylinder for it?Not sure of the vintage its serial # 47-56xxx so is it even possible to get one?

You'll most likely have to send it back to Ruger for them to fit one, last time I was looking spare cylinders on the open market were getting hard to find.

Call Ruger and ask them.

I have a couple of .45 convertables. I got the second one so I didn't have to bother swapping the cylinders. I leave one as .45 Colt, and the other as ACP.
And, frankly I almost never use the ACP gun. Really its just a spare in case something major happens to the other gun.;)

I do like the ability to shoot two different cases, but for me, at any rate, I learned that the convertible is only really useful if you might be in a situation where you are out of .45 Colt, but still have .45acp.

My favorite 'Hawk is #46-76XXX, bought new in 1983. I don't know Ruger numbers and years, but I would guess yours is an early-mid 80s gun, based on mine.

Ruger's furnishing auxilliary cylinders is an on-again-off-again propopsition. Sometimes you can send a .45 in and they will fit you a cylinder. Other times, its no-go. Then when the moon is in the right phase, the will fit only if the gun was a convertible to begin with.

Contact Ruger by the moon phases.

Otherwise, Brownells sells blank cylinders that you gunsmith can easily and expensively chamber for you.

Worth the try !!!

It might need hand fitting, it might not.
Took the words out of my mouth and I can tell you from personal experience this statement is very true. So I guess it's worth a try and then send it in if need be. ..... ;)

Call Ruger but when I did they said if your Blackhawk was not a convertible to start with then they will not fit a second cylinder. Years ago they would do it for extra money. So search fleabay and gunshows and find one that if you are lucky will fit. You may have to take it to a pistolsmith to have it fit well.

Option B is to sell it and buy a convertible.

Convertibles say "45 Caliber" on the frame instead of "45 Colt". What does yours say?

I have a convertible with an idle 45 ACP cylinder in its little red flannel pouch, which needs to stay with the gun, which I bought for 45 Colt. I would trade the set for a nice 45 Colt NMBH (but not a convertible with a missing cylinder). Mine is 7.5".
