45 black talon and pmc starfire

Per Wiki, it was never illegal to possess the Black Talon ammo. Winchester simply pulled it due to the backlash involving the Rhode Island massacre. I've seen it for sale in gun shops, so I'm gonna say you're probably good to go.

Yes it's perfectly legal. If you're into paying extra for old ammo with a scary name packaged ina cheesy looking box, you can buy all of it that you desire.

A better idea is to buy the Winchester Ranger SXT. Depending who you ask they will tell you it is either:
1. Same Xact Thing(SXT) as the Black Talon only in a brass case.
2. A bonded version that serrates less severely but doesn't break apart on impact.
3. An improvement on the old design that is even better than the old stuff.

Also, if you want something that does produce the little claws like the old black talons, look into the Remington Golden Sabers. IRCC, one of the designers of the golden sabers was a former Winchester guy that also helped to design the black talon. So, if that is true one would only imagine that they are an improvement over his older design. Regardless the golden sabers are good little things that do have a good spread.

It (original Black Talon) regularly sells for upwards of $50 a box on Gunbroker.com. Allot of ammo collectors buy it.

They are better than fmj's but Federals HST's are a better performer imo. Black Talons do have a cool factor tho. I know all about the cool factor hahaha.

I own a Desert Eagle....:D

Hhmmm...tell me about the PMC Starfire.... I know all about the Black Talon's, but don't know anything about the Starfires...sounds possibly interesting, maybe.--Patrice;)

The only ammo that is illegal for sale is armor-piercing. Some ammunition boxes are labeled "For Law Enforcement Use Only" but that only refers to the manufacturer's marketing practices. (Or, is a clever advertising gimmick.)

It's perfectly legal to purchase, own, and shoot such ammo anywhere in the country except in the People's Republic of New Jersey, where hollow-point ammo cannot be carried by the two or three people who actually have concealed weapons permits.

The PMC Starfire Gold is actually the precursor to Federal's HST. The same inventor (Tom Burczynski) designed both of these rounds. Tom left PMC over a dispute with PMC for not loading the Starfire to the velocities called for in his design. (~100fps below optimum)

Federal's HST does have a technology advantage over PMC's Starfire Gold, in that it does not clog as easily and is much better retaining its jacket.

All in all, the Starfire is still a decent round, but it is no HST.

Hhmmm...tell me about the PMC Starfire....
It had a unique, fluted hollowpoint cavity. The ribs and flutes increased surface area inside the cavity for fluid pressure to impinge upon, which, in theory, increased expansion reliability. In reality the ribs, protruding from the cavity wall, snagged cloth plugs when the bullet passed through clothing which inhibited or prevented bullet expansion.

Starfire expanded superbly in bare gelatin, surpassing expansion performance of conventional JHPs.
