I bought a miliatary springfield 1991 this past fall when i got my permit. I have prolly only put 100 rounds through it. I am a college student who doesnt really have tons of cash to spend. However i do want to get good with this gun. I have seen advertisements for WOLF and Sellier Bellot ammo for prettty cheap prices. About 6.2 cents a round for wolf and about 16 cents a round for sellier. I really dont know much about 45 ammo. I want to get something that i can buy in bulk that wont hurt my gun. THis gun is really old and in perfect condition. I would like to do my best to keep it that way while enjoying it. Any info on some cheap quality ammo or where to get it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Wolf ammo is very dirty. It has a coating on the bullet that prevents it from rust I believe but causes a bad build up very quickly in your weapon causing FTF & FTE's. Most would agree to stay away from Wolf ammo at all costs. The S&B ammo is pretty decent for range ammo and the such.

cci

Try some cci blazer ammo if your not going to reload, but the s&b is good stuff as well, the wolf is not at the top of list.

I use Winchester 230 gr FMJ that I buy at Sports Authority for $10.99. Magtech also shoots well, it is also brass cartridge 230 gr FMJ - about $10.00 per box. There are also lead bullet reloads available at many shops.

There have been several thread re: Wolf ammo. Check them out. Personally, I'd stay away from the stuff. As an option, I'd go w/ S&B, CCI, Winchester & Federal brands depending on what's on sale ;)

You may wanna check this place out too ;)http://www.natchezss.com/

Check out Natchez as mentioned for Blazer .45. If you buy a case, 1000 rounds (20 boxes) it will come out to being about $8 and change. Including shipping, it costs me $170 per 1000. Your cost might be slightly more or less depending where you are relatie to Natchez. You need to buy in bulk to offset the shipping, but that should do you for several range trips.

I've always considered S&B to be the best of the "cheap" stuff. Put a few thousand rounds of it through both my G21 and G19 and it's been nothing but reliable and accurate.

Double Naught Spy has some good advice.

I buy most of my ammo through:

www.natchezss.com

@ 1,000 rounds the CCI/Blazer .45ACP sells for about $8.50/box (including shipping) or $0.17 each. That's as good as it gets. The Sellier & Bellot is about $0.75 more per box of 50. If you want to reload, the S&B is brass cased and boxer primed and should be reloadable.

I'd stay away from Wolff and the steel cased stuff. The Wolff works well in my AK-47, but I'm not too sure about in my expensive guns. However, I have heard of several people that have had good results from Wolff and plan to continue purchasing. I'm sticking to brass.

For inexpensive ammo, my list goes as such from most favorite to just favorite:

$7 - $8 per box of 50, all other ammo is pretty close, usually only a dollar different either way in my neck of the woods.

CCI Blaser
PMC
Sellier and Bellot
Remington UMC
Winchester white box

If you plan to shoot the steel cased ammo, make sure you have a spare extractor in your tool kit. Steel is not as elastic as brass, and after firing, the cases won't shrink back as much from the sides of the chamber and can place more stress on the extractor. I know the US military used steel .45 ACP cases at one time alsok but I've seen an extractor hook pull off after a few rounds of steel cased ammo. This was in a Commander with the factory extractor.

I heard that the steel case stuff can scratch your chamber(???)
most of the stuff I get in the range brass i buy is S&B , followed by winchester , so It must be pretty good stuff , the stuff I buy new is either pmc, or winchester white , then american eagle .but it will never be wolf .

S&B is, in my experience, VERY GOOD ammo.

I've gotten it as cheaply as $6.50 a box of 50 rounds, so you sure can't beat the price.

Hey, thanks for the info guys. I will take the advice of staying away from wolf.
As far as the english teachers that posted their response in respect to my grammar, rather than being constructive and answering a question:
When someone types alot on their computer they tend to use shortened words and phrases. THis is simply to save time. I am sorry that in your attempt to answer my question, you were sidetracked by the very difficult task of dicyphering the word "PROLLY".

FWIW, I've shot a lot of S&B, Fiocchi, etc. no problems in my Kimbers and H&K. I tend to go with what's on sale at Natchez or Cheaper Than Dirt. I like S&B, reasonably clean accurate, and consistent, no FTF's. YMMV

If you get into reloading, I've heard that the primer pockets are a bit tight in the S&B ammo. I can't report back on that aspect myself, at least not quite yet, until I dig into the 5 gallon buckets of empty S&B .45ACP cases in my garage and start reloading, too...

One of these days, I'm going to have to see for myself, load up that brass, and stop buying ammo by the case...
