What is a good choice for .45 acp target ammo. I want the most bang for the buck. I plan to do alot of shooting with the new para ordnance I am going to buy. Do I want hp, jhp, fmj, swc, or what. I have never owned a .45 before so I want consistent ammo for all the shooting I plan to do. Thanks for any insight you can offer.

The brand I hear about many times is Sellier&Bellot. It's cheap and functional. A box of 50 rounds usually runs under $9 at most places. For target practice most people tend to use 230grain FMJ. If you plan on carrying your handgun around, make sure you shoot good amounts of *quality* carry ammo to function test them. Federal HydraShok, Remington Golden Saber, Speer Gold Dot, Cor-bon, are all excellent.
I can't recall any online stores right now but I'm sure someone else can tell you where to get all of this stuff for cheap.

Jeepster: Are you going to be practicing defensive shooting, practicing for competition, just plinking, or all of the above?

I suggest any brand-name non-premium 230 grain FMJ rounds for plinking and non-competitive target shooting. This includes Sellier and Bellot, Federal American Eagle, Winchester White Box, Fiocchi, Remington UMC, etc.

Consider shopping the better Internet ammunition sources (Ammoman, Cheaper-than-Dirt, Natchez, etc.) for lowest price when you need to replenish your .45 ACP stock. FWIW, I have experienced excellent service and high-value pricing from ammoman.com -- and their cost includes all shipping. Also, some of the Internet ammunition sources will occasionally have surplus government issue .45 ACP FMJ loads for sale; this is usually excellent ammunition manufactured by Federal.

I plan on practicing for competition. I am really interested in joining a club. I also shoot at the rock quarries in my town. I'd like one all-purpose round to rely on. Then again, you can't always have everything you want.

What does the law require when purchasing ammo through the mail. I live in taxachusettes and our laws are stringent. I'd really like to buy in bulk but I'm not sure what the law says.

Jeepster- I'm also from MA- There is no restriction on buying ammo thru the internet. I have bought plenty from Shooters.com. Buy away and let us know of any great deals you may find :)
