.45 ACP Mountain Gun

Condition One

New member
Just picked up a near new 625, 45 ACP Mountain Gun. It came from friends collection and he was more of a collector than a shooter. I have to admit that the finish is not quite up to the previous S&W standards, but fit is excellent and it shoots great. Haven't tried any 25 yard groups with it yet, but I will take care of that this Sunday. Any one here have a Mountain Gun in .45 ACP. How do you like the new style floating firing pin. Do they take the same Wolff spring kit as the older Smith's? I'll give you guys a range report Sunday night. Shoot Safe....CO

Don't have the 625 MG, but I have a 1989 625 and a 625 v-comp.

I'm not a fan of the frame mounted pin. It takes a stronger spring to get reliable ignition.

The regular RP Wolff springs will fit, but you'll probably need to order a new full length strain screw. ($3 Brownells) That way you can trim it to length to match the power of the reduced power mainspring.

BTW: The new 11# trigger return springs are great!!

Have had a 45ACP MOUNTAIN GUN for 5 years. I've shot the bejabbers out of it; it may well be over 5000 rounds now but I'd have to check records to be sure. It has been a wonderful sixgun, smooth as a baby's butt and accurate as all gitout. It was my birthday present to myself in '95 jes' cause I'd been a Sweet Ol' Boy...oh, and made it through another divorce; THANK GODALMIGHTY, I'M FREE AT LAST!!
I've owned a bunch of 45ACP sixguns over the years, still got 'em all too, and this one may well be the pick of the litter. My shooting buddy begs me to bring it to the range just so he can shoot up piles of 45ACP ammo and not pick a case off the ground. It costs him lunch every time...jes' 'cause Ima Sweet Ol' Boy, ya understand. TM
