45 acp conversion of an m-1 carbine?

I know i read somewhere that someone makes an m-1 carbine in 45 acp, does anyone know who this was, it was in an old gun magazine(at least 4 years ago)

I don't think anyone currently makes such a carbine. There are carbines in 9mm and .40, and of course the semi-auto Thompson is still (I think) being made, but none are copies of the M1 Carbine and do not resemble it.

Many of the guns described in the gunzines are one-off or custom made and are never produced in quantity. The articles are "trial balloons" to see if there is any interest in the idea.

better idea...

Get the CCU from Mech-Tech Sorry - I can look it up right now - got a new born in my arms... typing by pen here...

The CCU has an advantage over the M1. Smaller size. Lighter. more accurate. (match grade Jarvis barrel) a plethora of magazines for it. Parts are everywhere. Simple. Cheaper. You can get the CCU for only 350 (I think) The CCU, with a 10 round mag in the well and an aim point type gunsight on top... Man - You are WELL ARMED.

If you had that on a Para... Dang!

Oh hell - now I want one!

MAG-1 CARBINE

I remember a few years back a company in Michigan IIRC was trying to get the "MAG-1" carbine idea off the ground. Essentially an M-1 chambered in .45 WIN MAG. I think they were doing conversions on customer supplied weapons with plans of eventually marketing completed rifles to the public. I cannot remember the name but I want to say it was something like "Michigan Armory" or "Michigan Armament"

.45 WIN MAG?

George,
I didn't design it, and this was a few years back. At the time the .45 Super was just being done by Ace Hindman IIRC.

Is this (mech Tech CCU) CA legal? This AW ban really sucks!! How about one in 400 carbon? wouldn't that be a good idea for 3 gun matches?
TIA

Got One!

I have a Mag-1 Carbine, it's chambered in .45 Winchester Magnum. It was purchased from an ad LeMag ran in Shotgun News many years ago. I've had it so long I don't even remember when it was. It was a complete gun and came with two converted magazines and a synthetic pistol grip stock, which I don't care for much because the metal handguard refuses to stay on for more than the first couple rounds fired. I heard there's a difference between some manufacturers of the original carbine so some stocks fit, others don't. I don't shoot it enough to make getting another stock a priority. The reason I don't shoot it much is the cost of the ammo, not cheap stuff and quite difficult to find. I reload .45ACP for my pistols but don't have the dies for the magnum round. Not long after aquiring the rifle I read a magazine article somewhere stating the Marines and some SpecOps groups were testing it. Obviously it didn't make the cut. Regardless, it's definitely fun to shoot and always draws attention at the range. I've tried to find a web site for LeMag without success, if anyone knows of one I'd appreciate them passing it on. Also, if anyone else is interested I can post a photo of it. I don't have any photos yet but if there is enough interest I will.

I'd love the Carbine in 10mm auto but .45 ACP is a low pressure round. Why use a low PSI round in a locked breach rifle that can take much more? Or maybe in 9x25 Dillon (a 10mm auto necked down to 9mm.)

14+1 rounds makes a very good .45acp rifle.

Neat idea, apparently not enough sold

To keep it alive commercially. The .45 Win Mag carbines (LeMag, you say?) apparently had a few problems, and I don't think they lasted long in business. I do remember that there were reported problems with the barrels splitting (rebored .30 carbine barrels), but I heard they got that problem under control (new .45cal barrels?). Apparently they are no longer around.

You can load .45 Win Mag using standard .45 ACP dies. I have done it for a friend with a .45 Win Mag LAR Grizzly pistol. You just have to back the expander and seating dies out to compensate for the longer case length. Taper crimp only. A little trial and error adjustment and it works just fine.

A few good photos would be nice. Thanks.

Mag-1 Photos

Sorry for the delay, life got in the way. This specific rifle is in the process of trade negotioations today but if they fail, the rifle will be put up for auction on GunBroker.com along with 300 rounds of Winchester factory 230gr ammo.

A few more

A few more photos, one shows a .45ACP cartridge compared to the .45 Winchester Magnum round. Muzzle velocity was reported to be around 1800 fps. Not bad for 230gr bullet! Great CQB rifle, very light and short compared to an AR but it does lack longer range and magazine capacity of an AR.

Finn Aagard tested a 10mm conversion when I was with American Rifleman.

It worked great with factory ammo, but when he started loading for it, one round of loads, taken from from the manufacturer's loading sheet, blew the barrel.

Turns out that the data, which had been developed specifically for conversion by the manufacturer, had been jumbled. Wrong powder + wrong weight = destroyed gun.

Not long after the article appeared (Finn got a different gun and tested it only with factory ammo and major manufacturer data), the company doing the conversions went belly up.

Frankly, I have no interest in an M1 Carbine in any caliber but 30 carbine.
I consider the 30 carbine round and the M1 Carbine to be perfectly matched.
I keep my CMP Inland handy at home and feel well armed indeed.
To those who like the Mechtech...in the fantasy world of the ATF, once you attach the unit to a pistol frame, you have magically created a rifle...according to them, if you restore the frame to pistol status, you have broken the law.
