45 ACP, 200 gr LSWC, which is the weaker charge?

Does anyone know which is the softer/weaker load, HP-38/5.0 gr or Power Pistol/6.3 gr?

All other things almost equal, the gun didn't care for the PP/6.3 gr load, and I was wondering if it was because that load was too weak to cycle it. Failure to Feed.

Your load with Power Pistol is on the anemic side by a tad.

The 5.0 gr HP38 is good an should function in most pistols.

Personally, I have found Power Pistol to be more effective if start loads are 6.4gr up to 6.8 gr. These load levels are within the min/max parameters are given in the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook 4th edition.

The velocities, in my experience, have been from approximately 800-860 fps.....with Power Pistol.

After I started using VV N340 a few years ago, I hardly use anything else. Nothing wrong at all with the powders that you stated, just I personally like the N340 better.

Regardless, you have to load up enough to function your pistol or they are for naught.

I also really like the vvN340 in the 45 Auto and have started to use it exclusively. It is excellent in the 9mm with a 147g bullet as well. I also really like the vvN105 for 45 AR, 45 Colt, etc.

5.0 grains HP-38/W231 under a 200 LSWC for 45 ACP is THE all-time pet load for me. I've been loading this recipe since 1985. 840 f/s through a full-size 1911. You got it right the first time.

As for Power Pistol: I wouldn't use it at all for the application. For starters, it's slower than need be; and all the drawbacks that come along with it. You want a quick spunky propellant for the low pressure 45 ACP - such as HP-38/W231.

Power Pistol is much better suited for full throttle ammo in higher pressure semi-autos. Think 9mm, 10mm, 40 S&W, 357 Sig. That sorta thing.

For 200 grain lead semi-wadcutters the old time (and maybe all time) favorite for target shooting was just enough Bullseye powder to reliably cycle your 1911.

When I started shooting league pistol all the top shooters used that recipe and I've not found anything better...that said, aside from a dalliance or two with Red Dot and 700x Hi-Skor I never much looked at anything else.

Thanks everybody. The Power Pistol loads were from a few years ago, during the shortage that was all that was available. I'll try them in another gun with a lighter recoil spring.

I use 5.2 grains of red dot. Love it and it cheaper to buy the the others u mentioned.

Vitavouri is prolly some of the best powder out there. But around here at 40.00 a pound... mmm nope cant afford that
