.45-70

The January, 2000, issue of Gun Tests compared the Marlin Guide Gun and the Wild West Co-Pilot .45-70 rifles. Have any of you had any first-hand experience with either of these rifles? If so, which rifle and what is your opinion of the rifle?

Thought that both rifles are the same. The Wild West Co-Pilot just being a hotrodded version of the Marlin 1895G. Co-Pilot has a take down feature, forward sight mount, trigger job and optional nickel finish. The Co-Pilot has a "Magnum" chamber, allowing the chambering of a Wild West specific cartridge and at the same time can shoot standard 45-70's. A very trick rifle!

As for one being better than the other, I have doubts. The Co-Pilot does not overcome the 40000 CUP maximum pressure of the Guide Gun. A +P hand load, Garrett or Buffalo Bore in a standard 1895G will shoot just as well. It is all hair splitting, ballistically speaking.

It's all about gadgets. Man with the most, wins! :)
