45-70 Rifle - sake of argument

Was looking into doing a siamese mauser build, but with cost being too much of an issue it got me and a few like minded individuals throwing ideas around. There's plenty of falling blocks and break-action single shots out there, but how many modern 45-70 single-shot bolt rifles?

This questionin particular came up: would a savage single-shot action with a heavy contour or bull barrel be able to stand up to a 45-70 or 45-90? There would clearly be a great deal of work needed on moving parts, widening the ejection port, etc but just for sake of argument (not argument of purpose of application, mind you) would it work?

You can get a NEF Handi Rifle in 450 Marlin. Thats the equivalant of a fairly hot 45-70. I don't know how hot you can go with one tho. A Siamese Mauser can be loaded so hot three rounds is all I can stand and I'm not recoil sensitive.

All good points, but I'm not so much looking for a gun purchase as a challenging project (just want to make sure its not one that will blow my hands off). And I already have a handi rifle.

Since the Savage will hold belted magnums, it is certainly strong enough for any published .45-70 or .45-90 load. If you will settle for a single shot, the main task will be opening up the bolt face for the large rim diameter.

The ballistics of a 45-70 are plenty easy to replicate with reduced power loads in a 458 Win Mag. For a Savage all that requires is a barrel change and magnum bolt face. Cheaper than doing the 45-70 conversion.

By all means consider the Siamese Mauser. I have one with a 26" barrel and it is super accurate. The nice thing about it is that I can load it with bulles that range form 300 grains jacketed bullets to 550 grain lead bullets and it handles them all accurately. The recoil with the 550 grain bullets is stout; however, the recoil with 300 grain bullets, while stout, is managable.
