I had the .45-70 Guide Gun and the .444 Outfitter . I like the concept of the compact lever gun and big bore cartridge , I will probably get another .45-70 version down the road . I never shot the .444 but the .45-70 shot very well , it did have some kick , about like a 12 gauge slug . Marlin did make another interesting model with a limited run of 1000 with an 18" octagon barrel and a full length mag tube that I keep thinking I will run across , 1895 Limited II , I believe it was called . Good luck , Mike...

Never owned one of the guide guns,But I have owned 2 different 1895 Marlin rifles with half Magazzenes and longer barrels. The last one is not going anywhere.I have found them to be quite accurate and reliable.

I have one of these Guide guns. It really is a great package- a monster cartridge in an 18 1/2" barrel carbine. Believe it or not, the recoil is not severe at all. The barrel is ported at the end and it is heavy enough that it did not bother me and I am not burly at all (6'4 135 lbs). I think it's a great deal. Go for it.

I've not shot the Guide Gun, but I have shot a Marlin Co-Pilot by Jim West of Wild West Guns, which is from whence Marlin "stole" the idea.
Recoil is stout, no doubt about it, but then, with modern smokeless loads, you're throwing a 405 gr. bullet at about 1800fps, so what would you expect? The muzzle brake adds to the blast, but it does help tame muzzle rise.
Wish I could afford a Co-Pilot, but since I can't, I see a Guide Gun in my future.
