45-70 for Whitetail deer

Is the 45-70 a good deer gun or is it too much? I am pondering the idea of purchaseing a Marlin 1895G for deer and possible hogs or elk, should I?

The only time anyone is overgunned is when the gun is pointing in my direction. :D

.45-70 is a mighty fine deer cartridge and will hammer hogs most effectively.

Get the Guide Gun, they are beaucoup fun.

I really enjoy the NEF handi-rifle in .45-70 for swamp and brush hunting. Where I hunt whitetail the longest shot I'd have is 60 yds. or so and the .45 is great at that range.

To change the subject slightly, does anyone know about a rifle called (I think) the Wesley-Richardson or something like that? They supposedly make a break open single shot like the NEFs and H&R 1871s except they wear a 30-32" barrel and are drilled and tapped for a tang sight. Like a poor man's Sharps. If you have a telephone number or URL for this manufacturer, will you please post it here? Thanks.

45-70 for deer

It seems like a good caliber, to me. The effective distance for a 45-70 and a 30-30 are about the same. Short range. The knock down power is considerably better than a 30-30 but, the big gun will kick you like a mule.

Viejo,

Viejo,

The 45/70 will do a good job on deer. I like the 300grain factory hollowpoints for deer. I would go with a heavier bullet for bigger game.

Spartacus bought an 1895G for me. (Yeah, I know. :D) I used it on a small deer at about 55 yards.

That .45 caliber 300 grain Georgia Arms HP went through both shoulders, high on the entrance side, and a little lower through the exit. Instant kill. I classify the effect as "dramatic, but not excessive", and have decided to name my Guide Gun "One-timer", 'cuz I don't think I'll ever have to shoot them twice, if I get in a decent shot. Now, if I can just get a decent shot at those wild hogs next year...
