45-70 DG loads

I want to make a 45-70 Dangerous Game load. Why? Maybe I'll use it some day, maybe I won't.

The current load I'm working on is a 400 gr Speer soft point. But the jacket on it is kind of thin. This bullet I will use on deer and pigs, maybe elk.

But I want to make a short range DG hammer load. I am thinking about the 525 gr piledriver from Beartooth bullets pushed to 1600 fps (supposedly)
I would think that would work on a brown bear or ticked off bull moose at 50 yards. Any other suggestions?

I saw Woodleigh makes a 405 gr weld core that would probably do the trick too.

What rifle are you shooting? I think to shoot some 525 at 1600 fps You would need a Ruger No. 1 unless you are going to use black powder but than you still will not get that velocity. Just guessing and my 2 cents.

That's pretty much what I was going for. Except I'll load to +P and 1550 fps. Stout to be sure, but not above 36k cup, where the lever guns can handle 40k and the Ruger handle 50k.

I'm new to cast bullet usage or hard cast. But the field reports suggest that they make a big hole. And a 540 gr bullet at 1550 fps will probably stop the charge of anything in North America.

I've killed quite a few deer with my 1970 era Marlin "95". I also use the Speer 400 grain SP and send it out the barrel at 1800 fps. That load is a "knock 'em down and stomp 'em" load, for sure. I'd have no qualms over using it on elk.

Barnes has load data listed for the Marlin 1895 400 gr original at 1900 fps + a little.

That one should be a stomper.
