I have some of this powder but my four manuals don’t have a 405 grain hard cast. From what i can see 40 grains should get me a bit over 1600 fps . Does anyone use this. Its a penn flat nose beveled base round or should I be using a different powder

Thank you guys

Oh it’s a marlin 1895 22 inch barrel
I got great accuracy with the Buffalo Bore ammo but the steel rods implants in my neck can’t handle any more rounds ugh

45-70 405

Lyman lists 40 gr
as the starting point for their 457643 400 gr cast bullet for 1542 fps and 14,000 cup.Thats in the lowest pressure category.Speer starts their load data for their 400 gr jsp at 41.0 and a Max at 45.0 for Re-7.Again at lowest level.Alliant lists 40.0 as Max for that same bullet at 1580 fps and 24,900 cup.I did see your second post but thought you may still be interested.I cast a 405 gr Lee hollow base for mine.

After owning a good number of 45-70 rifles and spending a lot of time at the loading bench with them, H322 has never made my list of the best powder to use. Not even close. Go with 4198, Rel7, or 2400. I can get 1moa for five shots at 100 yds with any of those powders.

I use almost nothing but Trail Boss in .45-70 these days. Super soft shooting, and quite a joy to shoot all day long. My wife has a history with an old neck injury that makes shooting anything with much recoil a one shot thing. After that she wants to go home due to her neck hurting.

Out of my Marlin a 405 grain hollow base. (Lee mold, and a my favorite mold of all of them.) will hit like a semi going through the front of a store window. No super loud bang, and flash either. My friend tried some of them in a BFR and got hooked on them. He now casts and reloads for .45-70.

If you can not get Trail Boss. 14 grains of Red Dot works quite well too.

I use IMR4198 and IMR3031. I would never have thought about H322... even though I used to use it in the .30-30.

The other powder that I'm fixing to try is Accurate AA5744, which is supposed to be THE powder for cast in the .45-70. I'll tell you how it turns out after next week.

H322 at 45.5 grains looks really good accuracy wise in my gun. Just tried it today with penn bullets 405 hardcast. Really sweet. I don’t have a chrono but i suspect I am near 1600 fps. That’s within Lyman guide as the max is 48.5

By the way thanks bob for the bullets he shipped them to me and received them in two days

Steel in my neck steel in my back steel in my chest. Buffalo bore magnums tore me up. The ones I just loaded should work fine on moose and still give me some brown bear protection I think
