44special vs 45 auto

I have a hunch this is something of an apples versus oranges comparison, since although there are a few .45 A.C.P. revolvers, I've never heard of a .44 special model 1911.

six of one half a dozen fo the other. The ballistics are so close that you or the Goblin getting it wont know the difff. I personally wuld rather have a modle 24 than any 25 ever made. JMHO. Im a real sucker for a P&R Smith. Hence my love of 28's...

C.R.Sam is on the money.

FWIW: IF you handload, 44 special can be pushed much harder the 45 auto. Especially if sticking with traditional launch platforms.

As most of the other posters have said the two are ballistically very similar. The main difference I see with the two are the bullets. For the 45 ACP there has been a lot of research and development toward effective bullets. I don't see the same for the 44 Special as many bullets are of older design or a bullet orginally designed to operate at 44 magnum velocities. Now, having said that there are some good 44 Special loads and bullets out there just nowhere near as many as there are for the 45 ACP.

"I've never seen a .44 Spl. 1911..."

Hum... Hum....

Which begs the question...

Could you run .44 Special out of the few semi-autos that are chambered for .44 Mag? Desert Eagle comes to mind?

Would the gun be able to feed the case from the magazine?

Just morbid curiosity...

One difference...

I would bet there would be a difference in the cost of factory ammunition. I'd bet that the 45 ACP would be much cheaper. Mike?

Nope. Think 'headspace', Mike.

Same problem with .40 Auto and 10mm, differing case lengths...

Headspace ?
Those generaly headspace off of the rim.

Much as Coonan .357 can shoot .38 specials, with spring appropriate to the power level.

G,

This is purely an academic musing.

Zander, with semi-autos firing rimmed rounds, the rim normally provides the headspace. I'm sure the Desert Eagles headspace off the rim.

With rimless rounds, though, the case mouth is the headspace reference.

IMHO, once the bullet departs the barrel, there is no appreciable difference. The launch platform is a different subject.

The best load (well, high tech anyway) is CCI's Blazer 200 grain Gold Dot load. Rated (on the box) at 875 fps. Didn't state barrel length used to determine the speed.

Lady friend has a Taurus in .44 Special. Works very well...

Zander, welcome to the frain bade club.:)

Academic sneezing......be interesting to modify 1911 to take .45 auto rim. Headspace off of the rim. Would have no purpose except to dispose of excess money and baffle your friends.
