.44mag Load data Griers Hard Cast 300gr. FP

I have a few boxes of some old Grier's Hard Cast 300 grain .429 dia. bullets. I have attached a picture.

I am looking to load them up for my Ruger Super Blackhawk. I want to shoot these for targets, not hunting, so the lightest most enjoyable load I can get with this heavy bullet.

Any suggestions on a load? I have some data in my Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook for their 300 gr. bullet, and some data in my Oregon Trail Laser Cast book for a 300 gr. FP. I just want some other opinions on a load for this specific bullet if anyone has a good load.

I have a fair amount of 4227 and 2400 powders, which seem appropriate.

took a quick glance through my manuals. Saw the load in the lyman.

Lee
jacketed bullet, 2400, start 16.7 at 971, max of 19.0 at 1088
XTP, IMR 4227, start 18.0 at 1180 to 20.0 at 1312

Hornady
XTP, 2400 start 14.8 at 1000fps, max 17.1 at 1150fps
Xtp, IMR 4227 start 17.6 at 1000, max 19.2 at 1100

Know its not lead, had a hard time tracking those down. Hope this helps. I use jacketed data and just make sure I am not pushing too fast. for plain base lead in the 1000fps range max.

I'd just use the Lyman 300gr lead bullet given loads for that bullet for 4227 and 2400. That would be my suggestion. Looks like the low end should do the trick for you. I have not tested any loads with bullets over 240gr.

I just got into 44, mainly spl so far. Good friend has loaded for both for a long time. he shies away from the heavier bullets as the longer shanks take up too much space in the case. Don't think I have ever seen him shoot anything over 280 and he usually stays in the 240-250g range.

I would agree, but I have gotten into casting my own bullets. That give me to option to just melt it down and re-cast what I want :D. But shooting them up is not a terrible option either.

See your also in castboolits. Getting some good suggestions over there as well!

Your powder's are ones suited for full pressure magnum loads. At light target load pressures they will leave a lot of unburned fouling in the gun. You want some Bullseye or other target load powder. Maybe five grains or so.
