4473's and Cut-Away Pistols

I have seen a cut-away 1911A1 I would like to add to my collection of things 1911. Are cut-away pistols considered to be firearms by the BATF? Does one have to go through a fedcheck to buy one, does one have to fill out a 4473? The cut-away in question was/is a factory job, not one done to a pistol that left the factory, if that makes a difference.

I have seen a 3 gun set of Browning auto pistols for sale. It is the only set the factory ever produced according to the letter that comes with them. They are considered 'non-guns' by the ATF (not readily convertable) so no transfer is required and they can be mailed via USPS. I do not even think that they have serial numbers.
