44 special vs 44 mag - S&W 629

Simple question form a hand-gun nubie: Can a S&W 629 shoot both the 44 mag and the S&W 44 special? I looked at the loads side-by-side tonight & they don't look good enough against one another for me to drop the special into my mag without asking the question... What is the deal with the 44 mag versue the 44 special? Most stores around here carry the 44 mag in a "smooth" bullet and the 44 S&W Special in the hollow point.

The word "special" is neat and all, but I'm not into the consequences of mis-loading a gun... I purchased this gun as a side arm for elk camp.

The bottom line: what can I put through my 629 44?

just clean out the lead build up in cylinder from the shorter case. A good brass brush with lead removing solvent will do this, easy if you do it after shooting your gun!

In short, yes.

The only difference is case length and power level.

You will have to clean the chambers with a brass brush to remove any accumulated crud before you shoot magnums in it again, though.
