.44 Special Taurus

Gentlemen:

Since I prefer to practice with the weapon that I carry, and I get to shoot in my backyard, the normal method around here is to go to the revolver in the winter: you gotta reload the brass and to do that you have to find it, which can get impossible in the middle of a New Hampshire winter!

Since my Charter Bulldog has been shot out, and repaired, I should add, but the trigger..., and I don't really think the Detective Special 2" sufficient, I'm thinking on the Taurus 445 .44 in stainless, ported.

Any comments?

I had one of the unported 445s for a brief time. The short 2" barrel seriously reduced the performance of every factory round I chronographed through it and porting is just going to make that worse. Right out of the box it would hang up on one chamber (trigger pull doubled in weight for one shot).
I sold it for about a $35 loss and figured I was better off getting rid of the damn thing.

I hate hunting for brass. I looked at the CA and Taurus. If I were going to get a 44spcl. I'd look at the either of the S&W. I know that S&W is on the sh*t-list of many, but with the new onwership and president, I wonder if it might be time to start looking at them again. (Interesting interview this month in Shooitng Times) Attached are their two 44spcls. I was looking at the Mountain Lite (18oz).

Sorry about that, my attachment didn't work. Here is the mountain lite.

S & W

Pinetree:
S & W was on my boycott list for obvious reasons. I did read the ST piece, and I've heard/ read the discussions on various boards, but at this point in time I'm still unsure if they should return to the OK list.
After all, they were real happy to have Massachusetts as their captive market when they did their deal with the state and Boston...

At 2", I don't really expect high velocity, hence the desire to toss big rocks, normally hard cast 250's. Should I ever need to use it for real, there should be holes on both sides of the target.
Still, the Taurus doesn't look good, so I guess the Bulldog gets stroked by a 'smith...

I have an un-ported Taurus 445 in blue, and dispite what others have said, I like mine. The DA trigger is not as smoothe as I'd like, but it's not as bad as many others I've had. Accuracy is reasonable for the gun's purpose, and using the CCI Blazers with the Gold Dot HP's (flying astrays:D  ), it does present an impressive picture to anyone who's looking at it from that end! If the trigger doesn't smoothe up in the next couple of hundred rounds I'll send it back (Lifetime Davidson's and Taurus guarantees:) ), but so far it's done its job - every time I pull the trigger it goes "BANG!!!". Not real bad as far as recoil is concerned, either.

YMMV (as someone else on this board always says!)
