44 special loads

I have ruger super black hawk in 44 mag and looking for any load data on a 240gr FN bullet in Green Dot for 44spl. I have #7 powder but it leaves a bunch of unburnt powder when i load it to specs. But I was using magnum primers because I didn't have any large pistol primers at the time and that could have been the issue, the #7 worked really great in 44mag burned reall clean and not much muzzel flash. But I don't want to shoot a couple hundred 44 mag rounds my hand cant take it. I like to try some green dot in 44spl because I have boat loads of it.

If you know how to navigate the Alliant website you can find some neat recipes that you might not otherwise find.

The Alliant website says that you can use Green Dot in the .44 Rem Magnum, and recommends 7.0 grains with a 240 LSWC and the CCI 300 primer for 901 fps. You might be able to transform that information over to the .44 Special. It doesn't seem like a particularly powerful load. Your mileage might vary.

I use Unique for the .44 Special. 7.5 grains under my 240 lead cast bullet gives me 970 fps with good accuracy. That load does 95% of anything I want a .44 handgun to do.
 
Many years ago I was given an almost full 8# keg of Green Dot. I got it from a friend who had bought it for shotgun use, so was not afraid to use it. Besides, the green dots pretty well identified it.

I never used it in the .44 Special, but did in the .41 Magnum. Pretty close to Unique, as I recall. Sorry I couldn't be of any help.

A second data point: I have a copy of Alliant web data for .44 magnum using green dot from a few years ago. It lists maximum of 8.7 grains, with Federal 150 primer for 1190 fps at a chamber pressure of 35,000 psi with 240 grain JSP. Paw Paw did not mention chamber pressure with his data. I suggest you contact Alliant and ask them for starting point with Green Dot for the bullet you plan to use. I have always found them to be very helpful.

I used a lot of Green Dot many years ago for .41 and .44 medium power loads and it worked very well. There should be plenty of data published. The Speer manual always had data for all of the Dot powders. Unique is now my choice for .44 Spl. Good velocities and low pressures. Cases last forever.
 
I burned a lot of Unique as well as a lot of other Hercules powders. Then one day, on a lark, I tried Hodgdon powders, especially HS-6 for light to medium loads and been using that ever since. Actually I tried Winchester 540 first, then that was dropped and HS-6 was its twin, I stuck with HS-6.

My favorite powders now are Winchester 231, HS-6, and #2400.

Fired in Ruger .44Spec Flattops 5 1/2" barrels :

6g Green Dot under 240 SWC 950fps. Accurate
7g Green Dot under 240 SWC 1027fps . Accurate.
