How is the recoil between .44 special and .44 magnum want to get a small revolver for backup woods gun. I like the .44 but what is the difference.

.44 Special = pussycat
.44 Magnum = tiger
The difference is NIGHT AND DAY! The S&W M629 Classic in .44 Mag with 5" or 6.5" barrel is my all time favorite pistol. But they can be habit forming. I am up to four now. Most of the time I shoot handloads with 250 gr bullet at 1100 fps (about midway between Special and full power mag loads).

Try it. You'll like it (if the pistol is not too small).

I have a 629 6.5", I can shoot all day with 44spl. I enjoy that caliber, it is also what I have for home defence. The 200gr bullet on 44 spl travel at about 900-1000fps the same bullet in 44mag can travel at about 1500-1800fps depending on how hot the round is. 44mag is for hunting (good round for it). However I can't finish a box of 44mag at the shooting range. My hand trembles after two or three cilinders of it.

I was concidering buying (not sure of the model) S&W .44 mag 4" Scadium to go fishing in bear country. Has any body shut it with full boat 44mag yet? How is it? I use to take my 629 for that, but after carring the 340pd for a while I can only dream how much more pleasent would be to carry .44mag in scadium! :) And how much more recoil?

My whitetail deer hunting gun is the S&W 629. The Hornady 240 grain hunting rounds are WOW! I think the reason they come 20 to a box is because 20 is all one cares to handle. I've fired special handloads and they are calmer, but I'm having a hard time finding specials in the stores. If and when I do, they ain't cheap. Oh, one thing that helps with the magnum loads is a padded shooters glove. I even wear a weightlifters wrist band. Maybe it's whimpy, but it helps.

Just so you know, you can use .44 Specials in .44 Magnum guns. I'd personally go with a .44 Magnum S&W 629 and shoot mostly .44 Specials through it. Oh, wait, I did!! :D

If you don't reload, this is a good place to start if you like to shoot the .44s plenty. Factory .44 Specials are big $$. Factory .44 Mags are only moderate $. .44 Special is way more pleasant to shoot. I reload and will tell you there is nothing more satisfying than spending a day at the range with a couple of buckets of .44 Special ammo just going "pop, pop, pop" until your arm is tired of holding the gun up. Consider that 100 .44 Spec only costs around $8 to load, and you get the point.

Oh, and for a revolver, a 4" 629 Mountain Gun would be hard to beat, though a standard contour barrel of same length would be fine. Mine is a 6" 629, half-lug, and while it is great to shoot, it doesn't let you forget it is there out in the woods.

44s

i bought a 44 mag,629ss,4"bbl, from a woman that "used it to chase off gators " when she walked her dog, even though it was too urban an area for that, but near "the hood",lol, anyway i thought it would be good for the boat,if i got bothered,in the gulf, it'd be good for hull damage ;)
