.44 Special and .44 Magnum

Yes you can fire 44 Specials in any 44 Mag revolver. The 44 mag case is about an 1/8 inch longer and is loaded to much higher pressure levels.

As 629 Shooter said you can fire 44 Specials in a 44 Magnum.

Some people use 44 Special rounds when they are going to shoot a lot of rounds at the range, the reduced power/recoil of the 44 Special is easier on the gun and the shooter. The .44 special also makes a great defense round if you live in an apartment or condo. The 44 Special won't shoot through nearly as many doors and walls as the 44 Magnum round.

.44spl has around the same muzzle energy as 9mm/.45acp (360-400ft-lbs) .44mag is LOT morepowerful than that (most factory ammo ~750-1050ft-lbs) but even that is weak for .44mag.

Are you refering to handloading and Buffalo Boar et al (which produce more "substancial" ammo)?

You can also fire .44 Russian ammo from a .44 Magnum revolver.

The .44 mag, Special and Russian all use the same .429 diameter bullet. Difference is in the case length and power levels.

Thank ya'll...one other question

Thanks for the information...

Also...I saw some .44 Special ammo by American for $11.80 a box of 50. Is that a good price? Any opinions on the the American brand of ammo?

Person Of Interest, where do I find .44 Russian ammo? How much does it usually cost?

If it's the same American brand re-made ammo that they sell here in AZ at the big discount places I would stay the heck away from it, I got a few boxes of it in 45 acp and it was garbage, for a few bucks more buy any of the major range brands or CCI blazers, the American stuff looked like they had no quality controll, the cases were the most beat to heck cases I ahve ever seen, many with rims and cases damaged so much that no respectable re-loader would use them. Plus the american was loaded with such dirty powder that when I was shooting my 220 it looked like an old western with black smoke slowly curling out of the barrel.

I shoot a great deal of 44 sp having 5 guns that only shoot that

Every thing that I have read here is very well put and I would agree.
I wouldnt look for Russan 44 for the reasion that its rare and the cost would put you in the poor house.
The difference in 44 sp and 44 mag is very simular to 38 ve 357.
But when you shoot 44 sp in very light guns like Charter bulldogs and Taurus 445 they can let you know there throwing large bullets very quickly.
The other thing that I like is that the round is VERY ease to reload, the fact that its like loading a garbage can.

Ditto all other comments. 44 Sp fires very nicely from my Vaquero. Makes it into a pussycat where the .44 Mag, esp full house loads can be a real handful. I save the Mag stuff for campgun use (dangerous critters) and occasional hunting, also occasional "target" just to keep me enough familiar with it! I'm living off an old stash of .44 Sp ammo so haven't looked too much recently re deals out there on good quality ammo. Anyone? I did notice that Georgia Arms is selling an enhanced load .44 Sp now that sounds interesting. Not cheap, but interesting to consider for a nice SD load.
