44 spcl - 44 mag

I have a Winchester mod 94 in .44 mag that will not fire .44 spcl ammo.

All specials show a very light firing pin hit. The same ammo in a .44 mag SSA revolver have no problem shooting both mags and spcls.

Could the 1/10" shorter special case be the problem?

.44

the winchester may have a weak hammer spring coupled with harder primers for the special loads for whatever reason. the pistol lights them both off but the rifle cant quite manage....maybe

The rifle would not notice a difference in the cartrige length as the part that matters from the rim to the bolt face is the same.

Both are rimmed cases and the rims "should" be the same thickness. Maybe your 44SP brass is out of spec or maybe your chamber is. My 94 Trapper 44 mag whops the primers quite well.

If you have decent calipers, measure the rim thicknesses of both the Special and Magnum rims.
Easier than going to the trouble of getting new ammo.
If you don't have calipers, just check how tight each version of ammo is relative to the bolt face and extractor(s).
