Hi Folks!
I have been on the lookout for a used 6.5 in barrel(full lug) 44 Mag Smith&Wesson 629 for almost 6 months but do not see any at local gun shops. I am looking for peer advice on 2 questions:
(1) Is the lack of used guns because few people get rid of them?

(2) Given all the things to look for in a used revolver (punch list, for lack of a better term), do you have an opinion as to whether buying at a gun show is just about as hit or miss as buying at a local gun shop?

Your time and advice are greatly appreciated- :)

I bought a (new) Colt 1911 at a gun show, and it is a great gun. For the most part, I think you can get a quality gun at a gun show, but you have to know what to look for if you are buying a used gun at a show - 1911s and revolvers in particular. An unscrupulous dealer will look at a gun show as a good way to get rid of a gun that has been hacked up by a wannabe "gunsmith" by pawning it off on an unsuspecting buyer.

There are gunsmith wannabe types that can butcher a gun by giving it an "action job" if they don't know what they are doing; 1911s and revolvers are particulary susceptible. I would never, ever buy a used gun with an "action job" unless I knew the owner and who did the "action job."

If you know about guns and have some experience with them, you may already know what to watch out for in buying a used gun; if not, talk to a competent gunsmith or gun shop owner; they can (hopefully) pass on some good information.

Good luck!

No matter if it's a gun show, local dealer, or out of state buy you should know how to inspect the handgun for defects. The seller may be perfectly honest, but just doesn't know about the mechanics of the handgun.

I just bought a new 44 S&W 629 MAGNUM in 6.5 in full lug for $520 + shipping on the internet.

They are out there...
