44 russian

Why would you want to shoot .44 Russian in a .44 Magnum? .44 Russian cases/ammo must be as scarce as hen's teeth.

The cases are the same other than length. 1.285 for the mag vs. 0.97 for the Russian.
It should work fine, but why? If it’s very old brass it could be black powder.
I have a good friend that has an Uberti top break number 3 in Russian. Nice shooting gun.
Starline does make new brass for the Russian
As for loads use 44 special loads for cowboy.
Hodggdon has loads

Geessss I went the other way. I trimmed 44 Mag to make 44 Russian for my Grandfather's S&W Model 3.

Yes, you can shoot .44 Russian in a .44 Magnum or .44 Special revolver without issue. I shot a box of Fiocchi .44 Russian ammo that I picked up at a gun show for a little bit of nothing in my S&W 629 and had zero issues doing so.

I have a Navy Arms .44 Russian. It's a fun gun to shoot, a real powderpuff recoil wise. It is used a fair amount in cowboy action shooting. Some convert Henry repro rifles to shoot them as being so stubby you can get a couple of extra rounds into the tubular magazines. And then of course they then would want sixguns in the same caliber.

I saw some new 44 Russian ammo at the LGS the other day. I've heard that caliber is making a comeback due to cowboy action shooting.

Many years ago I had a Charter Bulldog in .44 Special. I liked using .44 Russian in that little revolver as extraction was more positive, the extractor throw being rather short in that Bulldog.

I HAVE SHOT UP THOUSANDS of 44RUSSIAN cartridges in my 44SPL sixguns. It is delightfully accurate and powerful beyond it's diminuative cartridge case. I shoot 250gr 429421 SWC bullets right at 900fps. Hodgdon's data.

Ive never tried it personally, but I have a friend who shoots Russians in his 44 Magnum and Special sixguns extensively.
@Bob, I just picked up a Bulldog and was thinking the same thing. Might have to get ahold of some cases and give er a whirl.

Probably 20 boxes of it sitting on the shelf at my local gun store. I have shot it through my 629 no issues just usually shoot .44 mag though.

I have shot 44 Russian from a Colt Anaconda. It has to be the quietest, lowest recoil ammo available for a 44 Magnum revolver. The payback is more fouling in the cylinder.

It is no more scarce today than practice grade 44 Special, unfortunately.

I love 44 Russian; kind of a novelty though (ironically). I've never seen new loaded ammo for it though. Starline makes great brass in 44 R and it's very affordable. I had to grind just a touch off my Hornady 44SPL/Mag dies to make them work. 3.5 grains of Trailboss and a 200 gr LRN works well. Trailboss is a great powder the the 44R.

All I can tell you is that 44 special and 44 Russian out of my 7 1/2" Ruger Super Blackhawk are scary accurate and can do a number on a rabbit at 50'. Just make sure you clear the carbon ring from the cylinder when you get done shooting and you won't have a lick of problem if your gun is anything like mine.

Black Hills makes them.

I can't speak for your handloads, but the rounds I shot raised smoke and stench. Not for the indoor range!
