.44 Russian S&W double action

15 years ago I bought a double action hinged frame S&W .44 Russian double action that was in excellent shape that had been reblued for $100.00
I may have misread gun traders guide but the lowest level listed was over $2,000.
I realize that without looking at the gun, it is impossible to guess a value; however, this value given seems way out of line.
Can anyone comment on what they think the value might be.

To get into the $2,000 bracket the gun is going to have to be all original with 98% or more finish remaining. Few new Smiths would grade above 98%. Depending on the quality of the refinish on yours....I would wild guess it to be in the 500-700 range.

My info from Fjestad's Blue Book.

Hi, Don Pedro,

I don't like to contradict C.R. Sam, but I believe he is thinking about the single action Russians. You said your gun is a break top DA in .44 Russian, which could be one of only two guns, the First Model DA or the Wesson Favorite. The .44 Russian was the most common caliber for both. The latter has lightening cuts above the trigger guard and on the top of the barrel rib, with the patent dates on the cylinder instead of the barrel rib.

The First Model DA in .44 Russian goes between $375 (10%) and $3000 per the Blue Book, but Flayderman only goes to $1000 for "excellent". (FWIW, I think that $3000 is too high; those guns are uncommon, but not really that rare, even in top condition.)

But if you have the Wesson Favorite, it shows in the Blue Book as $2000 for 10% finish, to a tops of $7600. Flayderman shows $3750 for very good, $8500 for excellent.

As to the reblue, some people consider a good reblue equivalent to 60%, but I don't think many collectors will go along.

Trouble with a reblue is that remaining original finish is zero. If it is a good job, some collectors might still want it to fill a hole in the collection, as there were less than 1000 Favorites made, and they are not found lying in the street.

As to value, I will make a couple of wild guesses. I would think a reblued First Model would run about $700. On a reblued Favorite, I would guess a value at around $2500, but a really good reblue could bring it up more. I have no doubt though, that your $100 was a great investment.

Jim....
we were on the same gun.
I left out the Wesson Favorite because I read it as they were all Nickle (Blue Nickle) finish.

However; you drove me back into the book and I see a footnote that says "Add 30-40% for blue finish.

Señor Don Pedro...
Easy ID. Ser #s tween approx 8,900 and 10,100. 5" barrel only. Plus the differences given by Jim.

If you have a Wesson Favorite, even with the refinish....tis a goodie.

Either way....really cool guns.

OoooKay....
Seems you do NOT have the Wesson Favorite.

Wish I had your problem.
You have one I'm missing.

And, you certainly got into yours right.
