44 revolver and 300 grain ammo

Hi,

Today at the range, one of the shooter had a gun that was more louder anything I have heard including some .45s.
I overheard it being mentioned it was a 44(yes 44) and had special ammo, 300 grain? It was a stainless steel revolver. Any ideas what was the possiblities?

Also, should does more grain affect the bullet?

Thanks

Ruger Redhawk, S&W M29, etc.

300g refers to the weight of the bullet; in the 44 much powder is needed to lauch a big heavy bullet fast, hence the 'boom'.

There are some pretty good manufacturers of hot 44 magnum ammunition.
http://www.garrettcartridges.com/ is one place that manufactures quality stuff for 44 Rugers. They are very careful in specifying which guns are safe to use. My point it that I have fired some of this stuff in my Ruger Super Redhawk and it is very, very loud.

Every now and then, a reloading shop outside of Las Cruces has 300 grain JHP in 44 Magnum. They look real wicked. Since I no longer have my 44 Magnum, I can't try any. :(

As Wes said..it is the weight of the bullet. I routinely shoot 300gr Hornady HP-XTP's out of my stainless steel Ruger Super Redhawk. Alot of revolvers tend to shoot the heavier bullets better than the lighter ones. The Ruger is built like a tank!!!

Yes, he was taking short breaks between rounds to avoid over-heating of the gun. And wearing gloves too! Makes sense.
I went and checked some of the Ruger long frame revolvers, some RedHawks are awesome incl. one with a 9 1/2 inch barrels.

Thanks for the welcome GunSlinger! :)
