44 magnum

Ive been looking into getting a 44 magnum revolver. My budget is around $450 or less if possible(I dont mind buying used). Ive looked at the ruger redhawk and the taurus raging bull. Ive heard a lot about the ruger blackhawk however I would prefer a double action. Ill be using this mainly just for shooting but would also like to use it for hunting hogs and deer now and then. Im not in an area where there is any threat of animals attacking me so my life wont depend on the gun however I would like a nicely made reliable gun. Ill carry this in a hip holster while hog hunting so I dont realy want a big 8 to 10 inch barrel. Any advice anyone could give me in picking one out would be appreciated.

All of my experience with double action revovlers has been pretty well limited to the S&W Model 29, so not of much help to you there.

But if you'd consider a Super Blackhawk...........

P.S. Regretably, $450 won't buy you much of a .44 Magnum revovler.

I'm thinking if you want a new double action in the $450.00 range you will be limited. If you want a used revolver, your still going to be limited. I looked for a used double action revolver in 44 Mag but what I found was everyone who had a 44 Mag wanted to keep it. You however may be luckier than I was.
If your willing to accept a single action I'm sure you can find a Blackhawk thats in your stated price range.

I think you are going to have to bump up your budget. I know of nothing that fits your price range new or used. However, you never know what you can negotiate. I love my SW and Ruger blackhawks but neither is even remotely close to your price range.

If you save up your rupees you can get one mine.

If $450 is your limit then a used Ruger Blackhawk is about it.

I'd save up the money and go for the brass ring.

Thanks. Ive found several blackhaws well inside my price range and that may be what I end up getting. Ill keep looking and may have to set some money aside here and there to bump up my price range. Not considering price what would yall consider the best 44 mag revolver? If anyone has shot the blackhawk or the redhawk what did you think of them? Thanks for the help.
Deaf smith thats a very nice looking pistol what would that one go for?

Funny thing about the Blackhawk. Even though you can find used ones fairly cheap, it is nonetheless a really fine gun. Hard to beat, overall. Accurate, durable, and strong enough for hot handloads and buffalo bore "1400 ft-lb" loads.

Redhawk vs Super redhawk... some don't like the look of the SRH, but I think the SRH DA trigger is better. In SA, they all feel pretty nice.

I have a S&W 629-6, good trigger. I was going to get a red hawk but could not find one when I was ready to purchase, but I could get a S&W. I personally do not enjoy shooting the Blackhawk, don't like the grips, but they are good guns.

Rossi makes a double action 44 magnum in your price range. I believe the last time I was at Academy it was on sale for $329.99. I can't really say anything for its reliability though because I have never shot one and don't know anyone who has.

I have a Taurus Tracker in 44 mag. I bought it new for under $400.00 a couple years ago. I don't pound it to pieces with really heavy loads (I have a Blackhawk for that) and it has worked out very well for me. Accurate, light to carry, and fits in my S&W K/L frame holsters.

Might be something to consider if it would meet your needs for what you want it for.

You can probably find a Taurus m44 model with in your budget. I owned one and it was relaible but I just did not like the ported barrel. I owned a few Taurus over the years and my experience is the revolvers are generally fine however; if you get a lemon, good luck dealing with their "so called" customer service for repair.

Buy a Ruger or Smith. Even used I don't think $450 is reasonable. I know you won't find a Smith&Wesson anywhere near that. Maybe a used Super Blackhawk. Find a way to up your budget now, or wait a little longer. I'm not even sure you can find any DA 44 at that price and a used SA is going to be close.

Right now my only 44 magnums are a Dan Wesson, that I have set up with a snubbie barrel... I did this gun in this format, before Ruger came out with the Alaskan... mine is blued, & if it had been stainless, I might not have bought an Alaskan ( though my Alaskan is in 454 Casull ) if you can find a Dan Wesson, I think they are probably really the finest double action ( I know the Colt guys will argue ) but accurate, durable & smooth, & you can change out the barrels for a length that suits your use )

my other 44 Mag is a Contender, which is not a revolver, but still quite a hunting handgun, because of the break action style, the barrel length can be longer, than a revolver, & keep the same over all length... ( my 10" Contender, is the same length as my 6" S&W revolvers ) the additional barrel length, gives you the best velocities per size of gun, in comparison...

If you are going to shoot full power .44 mag rounds, there's no real advantage to having a DA over a SA revolver.
It's not something most folks would rapid fire.
Of course you can always either use .44 Special ammo, or download the .44 Mag, if you reload.
Then the DA is useful.

Thanks for the help. I found a blackhawk for a good price that I may go ahead and buy. I do reload abutwill probobly shoot mostly full power 44 mag loads. I was really just looking at the redhawk and other da pistols because im used to shooting double action however I dont mind shooting single. I just like shooting double and seem to be a little more accurate now with the longer trigger pull.

Hmmmm..... maybe not in your budget range, but the Ruger Blackhawk is the way to go for a hunting piece. Get one with a 5.5 inch barrel. This is the handiest size for carry, and is long enough to shoot well. Enjoy!

Speak for yourself.

I know that if I had to carry around either my Super Blackhawk or my Redhawk 44 magnum all day, I'd rather have the SBH. It's lighter for sure!

That said, either one will handle full house loads quite well. Only question, single or double-action?
