.44-40 shooters out there?

I've shot and reloaded .45 Colt for more than 20 years, but am for some reason being tempted by the .44-40. If anyone shoots the .44-40 for CAS or hunting, I'd appreciate your sharing your experiences, particularly if you have observations about relative performance of the .44-40 and the .45 Colt in rifles.

A Win 73 replica in .44-40 is calling...

I've got a Win 73 in .44-40 that I'm repairing now. The hammer sear has been filed down to the point that it won't stay cocked. I'm looking forward to getting it back in safe shooting condition. I've also got a Win 86 in .40-65 but I don't know if it's suitable for CA shooting.

Don't know about the big national or regional matches but the '86 would work fine for your long range rifle if loaded one round at a time (so as to not have an advantage over single-shot rifles).

I've shot and reloaded for .44-40 for my Cimarron Model P and Marlin '94 Cowboy II for several years now. Very happy with the results, too. I use a 200 grain hard cast bullet from Flite Line Bullets in Pa., in Starline brass ahead of 6.1 grains of Unique.

A light load, but that is all I was loking for...

I can name at least six cowboys, cowgirl and junior that shoot 44-40. Problem is I don't think they chat on wires much. All of them shoot original 73 Winchesters. Which up until the early 1960's was the rifle carried by the guards at the Kentucky State Prison system. One reason there are so many in this state. The state sold them back to the public. I have even seen one ex-KY prison rifle in 38-40. How do they work?...Ever hear of a large prison break in Kentucky? :)
