Does anyone know if brass and cast lead bullets can be purchased for the 43 mauser? I have a 1887 model in good condition, and I would like to load for it. Also, I live in Canada, has anyone bought reloading components over the internet and had them shipped to Canada? If anyone has any info, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

I knew a fellow who was shooting an 1871 Mauser for the same cartridge, so it can be done. I strongly suspect that your best route for bullets is a custom mould. You're going to need to slug that bore and order your mould .002 over. Huntington's is the first place I would check for brass and dies. That's very odd brass, but the last I heard basic cases were available to be trimmed and reformed.

What I hear from our Canadian friends is that fees and duties will eat you up, but it can be done if you must. Best to get everything in one package to hold down on those costs.

RCBS makes a mold that normally drops them about 375gns and .448 diameter when cast from 20:1 alloy. Bertram and BELL both make cases, but the Bertram tends to be cheaper and quality is fine. As far as not casting yourself, here's a place that does loaded ammo, but I have not used any yet.

They have a 43 Mauser load with a 346gn lead bullet. I have not checked it, but it ATB a binary tin:lead alloy, which is what you want for the older rifles. S/F...Ken M

.43 mauser

Midwayusa has the Bertram brass, about $35 per 20.
No one seems to sell bullets in .446, but a number of cast bullets in .451-452 are available and could be sized down .
The first thing to do is slug the barrel and see what size you really need.
Cast bullets usually shoot better if they are .001-.003" oversize.
A listed load for the .43 mauser is 30-33gr IMR 4198, of course ,start out on the low side. Since it is very similar to the .45-70, likely most .45-70 trapdoor loads would be fine.
Mountain molds is supposed to make custom molds for about $50 and up.
You might explore their web site.
The original bullet weight was about 375gr.
Lee makes custom sizer dies for $25 , just use them in your regular press.

Adam, I don't know if you are still interested, but Rusty Woods Trading in BC carries Bertram brass for the 43 Mauser. I bought 50 pieces last year. They are expensive, though...

PM me if you need more information.
