.410 Single Shot Advice

I am looking for a .410 for my 11 year old, mostly.:D

I've been cruising the net and looking at the different manufacturers. The CZ single shot youth model looks good. Any one with any experience with CZ shotguns?

Also the TC Encore looks real nice. A .410 barrel for rabbits and ptarmigan and a .375H&H barrel for Mr. Moose.

I'll probably settle on a NEF Pardner, but I don't want to.

Any one with more/better ideas?
 
I've never heard anything bad about NEF single shots. They also make a .410/.22lr combo. I think that would be a perfect first gun for a youngster.
 
Yes.

Get a 28 gauge and leave the .410 for the pros where it belongs. Patterns are FAR better with the 28, recoil is not that much different. Shells cost maybe a bit more for the 28 depending on where you buy them but they are available most anywhere that sells .410s. And NEF makes the youth model in 28 gauge too. Cheap way to try one too, next thing you know you might be looking for a svelte little SXS in 28 yourself- 8^). I hear they are addicting.

-edited to add: The 28 gauge is a nominal .550 bore diameter, so it isn't a lot bigger than the .410. Most loads run 3/4 ounce of pellets at usual velocities, 1200 fps or so. See the essay at http://www.chuckhawks.com/28gauge.htm for more on the little shell that could.

I would agree with Lee, The 28 guage is a much better gun for a youngster to learn on. The recoil isn't much more than a 410 and the shells cost about the same. He will appreciate the ability to hit things that become marginal with a 410. I shoot tons of skeet with the 410 and a 28, I don't use the 410 off the range but the 28 goes hunting with me most often.
