.410 Enfield

My father recently picked up a Enfield that has been converted to .410. This was done in the 40's apparently for use in India.
Blocked for single shot only.

I haven't been able to see it yet.

Does anyone know anything about these? Are they very common? Value? Any info would be great.

Thanks,

I have gotten the chance to examine several of the weapons at a local gunshop that deals mostly with surplus weapons. They were selling for $110.00 in good/fair condition.

I am told that they were designed for a special cut down version of the .303 cartridge loaded with shot. I have also been told that standard 3 inch .410 shotshells will not work, but .410 2 1/2 inch shells will chamber and fire safely.

Some good information can be found at

They have a section devoted to just Enfields that I have found to be a good source of information.

A lot of those were sold in England also, at a time when rifles were not licensed unless one had access to a hunting area, but shotguns could still be bought fairly freely with only registration. From what I hear, many have been rounded up now, as the police have been refusing shotgun license renewal for any reason or no reason.

Just a warning for this country, when the anti-gun gangsters say that we license cars, why not guns. The answer is that so far, at least, no one wants to ban cars.
