I use jacketed soft points for most of my handgun hunting. But recently tried Hornady hollow points. Both types have given me excellent results on deer. Not enough of a difference to recommend one over the other though. Dead is dead, and the same amount of tracking (30 to 50 yards).
My deer load for the .41 Mag. is a 210 grain XTP over enough H110 to push it right at 1,300 fps. I get gilt edged accuracy out of my Smith M57, and it will penetrate a normal white tail from front to back with good expansion.
I have a 44 mag SBH. It has never been my primary weapon but I have killed several deer with it. Deer have a way of appearing when your long gun is out of reach. I use jacketed soft points for hunting.
I have had great experiences with the Winchester 240gr Platinum Tip. 8 whitetail, 2 feral hogs and a book Fallow Deer have secumbed to its accuracy. My weapon of choice is a stainless Ruger Redhawk with a 7.5" barrel and topped with a 2X Leupold handgun scope.
Each design has its theoretical pros and cons, but those don't always prove to be true in reality. Just pick something that's tough enough to do the job, without punching a clean hole straight through.
For .41 Mag, I'd be considering a 13-18 BHN lead bullet (nearly anything but a RN), the Speer 210 gr DeepCurl (good bullet), or even the Remington 200 gr Semi-Jacketed SPs. ...if you reload.
I too like the 210 grain Speer Deep Curl (formerly Gold Dot) as has been already mentioned. There are several good loads that others have referred to, but I think if I had to pick one for deer, this might be it. jben
