.41 mag self-defense - Which ammo?

Will be picking up my 'new' Redhawk .41 soon (the CCL ammendment has arrived in the mail, along with the one for my LW Commander XSE - (in NY)); at the same time I will be working on getting our new property/house more...livable over the next few months...(8 wooded acres next to the middle of nowhere). Anyway - while I will be carrying the .45 'in public', I like the idea of packing the 41 around the home/land while I am there -

- so what is the best factory SD ammo in .41 magnum?

Thanks! 175gr @1250fps - looks fine - this is a lighter load shooting-wise?

edit:
woah - compared to their 240gr at the same fps - I guess so!

The 175gr Silvertips are a good load for your .41 Mag. It's worked well in two specimens of the S&W Model 57 that I've owned.

Recoil is substantially lighter than the 210gr Remington load (@1300fps) though it's no pussycat either.

Speer has their 210gr Gold Dot hollowpoint available in .41 Mag and I just fired some at the range. Plenty accurate but somewhat abusive for self-defense loads and not condusive to rapid double-taps (like you'd need to do that anyhow! :D ).

When I've carried a .41, I typically load it with 175gr Silvertips and carry 1 speedloader of the same and one of 210gr Federal Power-Shok JHP in case I need to penetrate the cars the BGs are hiding behind.

I just wish I could find some of the old Remington 210gr LSWC "police" loads too.

.41 Magnum self defense loads

Remmington and Winchester make good "CCW" ammo.
What I can not find is a box of HP ammo in boxes of 50.
Help!!!

The Silver Tip is a very good choice but you might also look to Cor Bon and Mag Safe for other options. TGC

Thanks all for the info. Ordered a holster yesterday - should be waiting for me when I get back to NY after vacation. Darn - will have to get some speed loaders too. Have a box of the Gold Dots to try out, but will definetly pick up some silvertips as recommended.

ANyone have an HKS (or other brand) number that will work with the Redhawk?

edit: ok - found the HKS 57m - should be it.

Tamara,

Have you fired those Speer 210gr Gold Dots yet?

On a recent trip to the range I found them to be very accurate out to 25 yards (max range distance). Best was a 3-shot group measuring 3/4" at 20yards. But the recoil & muzzle blast relegates them to speedloader duty for me. I prefer the Silvertip loads as they permit quicker follow up shots.

If you want to try your hand at being a recoil junkie, try the Winchester 240gr Platinum tip (hunting) loads or Federal's 250gr Cast Core. Be sure to bring a wrist brace. :D

I happen to know that with a good dose of blue dot a speer 220 HJFP can easily(and safely) do an honest 1550 out of a 7.5" 41 redhawk. And in both of mine they are VERY accurate.

Sory for the tanget there.....
