41 mag deep curls are available once again

I think dinosaurs still roamed the earth the last time I was able to find these--just picked up a couple of boxes from Midway.

I shoot these in my 44 Magnum, and they are awesome.

They used to call them "Gold Dot", but changed the name in the last few years. They are always in short supply. I just bought a few hundred 240 grain from Midway.

Well, more specifically, they used to be Gold Dot Handgun Hunting bullets, which were supposed to be tougher than a standard Gold Dot made for LE and self-defense. I assume they are using the same method of electroplating the jacket on in both cases. I don't know if the added toughness is because they make the jacket thicker or because they use a harder core alloy. I'd have to ask.

I talked to one of their techs who told me he has run the jacket electroplating machine, so that's a verified fact, as to process. He also said the softer plated jacket material can lead to higher load charges than harder standard jackets use. More recently, another of their techs told me the loaded ammunition demand is high for Gold Dots due both to commercial popularity and agency contracts, so all but about 10% go to the ammo plant, with the remaining 10% being the only portion sold for handloading. He thought that would change as the contracts are filled.

Here's a closer look at the hunting deep curls. Notice the serrated jacket "blades" which go down into the "ash tray" and are bonded/fused to the lead core (hence the name change to "deep curl"?). That's something I haven't seen before--but like I said it's been a very long time since I've been able to buy them.

Hmm...
I wonder if that means the discontinued .44 caliber versions will be back...

I think the .41 Deep Curls were the last deep curls that I bought, as a gift for a brother. ...Before my kids were born.

I started deer hunting with my M29 and Speer JSWCHP.I thought they were great .Only one was recovered ,30"of penetration opened to .50" .Never have tried the Deep Curl. Anyone have a comparison between the two ??

Here's a picture of the old "Gold Dot" hunting bullets before they were renamed "deep Curl". Had the same segmented jacket "blades" I believe. Speer told me they renamed them "Deep Curls" to avoid the confusion between them and "Gold Dot" SD type bullets. They are my "go to" bullet for deer with the .460.
