.41 Action Express Catridge???

So I am reading this book called The Terrifying Three (a GREAT book about MAC, Uzi, and Intratec) and I am in the ammunition chapter. The author (Duncan Long) makes mention of a .41 Action Express cartridge. Now this book was written in 1989, so was this .41 AE the precursor to the .40 cal? I must admit I don't know when the .40 cal was brought to market.

The 41 AE has a rebated rim, so you can shot it in a 9 mm pistol by only changing the barrel. Its ballistics were virtually identical to the 40 auto but it never caught on.

Sadly, the (much better than 40S&W) 41 AE is getting a wee bit tough to find ammo for (I'm one of the last).
UZI has a conversion kit for the 9mm version. Cases are the biggest problem right now.

Speer used to offer a 180g Gold Dot bullet that could be easily loaded to 1030fps - IMO the finest semi-auto defense load. Speer discontinued.
Sierra offered a 170g meant for the 41 Mag; a bit 'tough' for the 41AE, but still not bad. Discontinued for a while, but available again.

Better ballistics than the 40, bigger hole (a true .410"), lower pressure, and a barrel, recoil spring, and some mags - you're shooting from a 9mm platform.

I've made a considerable amount of this caliber (got hooked up with UZI shooters; boy, can they go through ammo!) but am now having difficulty getting virgin cases (no real big deal; I don't get many requests for this caliber).

My first pistol (an AT-84) was bought specifically so I cold convert it to .41AE. It seemed to be the best of both worlds. High cap, big bore, high energy, DA/SA with a safety, and a great grip.

The only problem? The company didn't make the conversions, or at least I couldn't find one. So, my AT-84 has remained a 9mm (and since been retired from general use as it has sentimental value: it was my high school graduation present.)

I have one of the old TZ75's that was originally chambered for 41AE. EAA arms makes conversion slides for their guns that will fit the TZ75 & TZ88's. I bought one in 40 S&W. I'd have to say yes concerning that the 40S&W pretty much killed the 41AE. I don't really shoot mine much because of the scarcity of brass. I have about 300-400 rounds. I got the 40S&W because of the ease of securing brass for shooting. I don't have much experience with either the 41AE or the 40 S&W even though I own both. My preference would be the 10mm if I was to stay with an auto, say for hunting or such. That I've used to drop a javelina running at 80 yds. Shot just behind the eyes. (I know, I know-- A lucky shot!) Part of the reason that the 40S&W killed the 41AE was S&W's advertising & the perceived notion that because of the rebated rim, the round would jam more than a rimless designed cartridge. Then the FBI & lots & lots of police departments got in on the act for the 40S&W/10mm rounds.
