.405 diameter bullets instead of .430 for 44 magnum

finally got to start reloading some 255 keiths today, ordered some bullets from Matts-Bullets in January. Even to-spec brass has the bullet drop right through the neck. i also ordered from a different company the same kind, those sit on the neck. measured them, instead of .430, they are .405 ?? I'm thinking even if i could get the bullet to magically stick, that is a huge difference in diameter ? i'm thinking i should send them back, although i ordered only 100 so i may waste more on shipping ?

would .405 be safe to even shoot in a pistol ?
i'm thinking they were just a bad batch as the box clearly states .430 semi-wadcutter.

If it were me I'd send them an email or give them a call. With a mistake like that I'm sure they'd work with you and send you the correct diameter bullets and probably even a shipping label to return the others. I'm sure they don't want a mistake like that out and about and will gladly fix the issue.

yep, i dropped them an email, they'll probably not be in the office until monday.
hopefully i was the only person with a bad batch or they'd be a lot of people shooting undersized bullets.

From .405 to .430 is .025.
A micrometer has .025 worth of .001 grads around the thimble.
The barrel is marked every .025.
I'm thinking its an easy to make error in reading a micrometer.
Especially if you are old and sort of blind!!

Well, they obviously mispackaged bullets a big game hunter wanted for his .450/400 Nitro Express. Half the difference could be made up with a paper patch of about four layers of onion skin paper (16 lb.), if you've ever fancied trying that practice out. No leading, good velocities. Over time it can strop your bore smoother.

I see pretty well :-) . i think they are incorrect as in-spec brass doesn't even touch the sides of the bullet. drops free into the case.

Sorry I was not more clear. I meant that your bullet supplier misread the mic.
I do not doubt your bullets are .025 undersize

41 caliber bullets generally go: .410-.411
40 caliber bullets generally go: .400-.401

So? Who knows. Are they gonna send you new ones?

"...would .405 be safe to even shoot in a pistol..." Sure. It'll barely even touch the rifling. And they'll settle nicely right on the bottom of the case when you try to seat 'em.
Unless you've made an error reading your calipres, send 'em back.
"...error in reading a micrometer..." That's why they invented digital micrometers. Manufacturers everywhere refuse to apprentice young guys so they had to do something about the old guys losing their sight. snicker.

I get my Cast Bullets from SNS Casting and I buy the coated . They make a nice Bullet but the first batch was small .428 . I called and told that .428 will not shoot well in the older Rugers (Three Screw ) . I ask for a little over size and got .431 works well .

SNS make a hard bullet and weights out at 241 I get a thousand each month .
