.40 S&W Shooters: Which ammo for target shooting?

It's time to make another large purchase of ammo, and I would like to get opinions from all you .40 shooters.

The last 1000 rounds I bought was S&B 180gr. I liked the accuracy of these rounds just fine, but I encountered a number of bad primers.

I've awlays had good success with Winchester USA 180gr. Also tried Fiocchi 180gr last night and like it. I have found the Winchester stuff and the Fiocchi in 170gr. on the internet for good prices...

So, which brands do you like and in what weights?

Thanks in advance,

AKrob

I bought a case of Fiocchi 145 gr JPH and am very happy with them. I have also been reloading 135 gr plated bullets from Berry's Manufacturing on top of PowerPistol (hard to get) and BullsEye (easier to find and just as good in the .40s&w) and they have worked quite well. I have never had a misfire, failure to feed, eject or anything else with either the Fiocchi or my reloads ... 1000+ rounds through my HK USP40C ... might have something to do with the gun ... since my sample size is small (1 gun in .40), I don't know.

I must say you are very lucky. Fiochi doesn't feed well for me in 40. I maybe got off 2 shots before a failure to feed. Both in my Taurus and the p9. It is cheap though, and I could not say if you got a good lot, or I got a bad lot. Have only done it twice and did not like it either time. The first was only 2 boxes, the second I regreted because I got 6 boxes. My choice is usually winchester white box, or pmc. That is if I am going to take the time out to collect the brass for reload. If you don't reload, then get blazer. Why spend the extra 3 bucks a box if you aren't keeping the brass.

i have benn using 165 grain PMC with good success. shoots to same point of aim as 165 grain Golden Sabers, feeds well and no misfires.

Whatever brand you use, consider not shooting 180 gr., they tend to have the greatest variation in pressures.
I personally like the CCI Blazers; they have total metal jackets and lead free primers, both a plus for indoor shooting, plus they shoot almost exactly like the speer gold dots I carry.
Only drawback is the aluminum cases if you reload.

How about recoil in the various weights? Is there less/more recoil in the 165gr vs. the 180gr?

I shoot with a USP Compact, and the only loads that I've shot that weren't 180gr are the 165gr Hydra-Shoks, which certainly had more recoil than the 180gr target ammo I had been shooting.

That is because they lower the bullet weight to jack up the speed. If you reload yourself, (which you haven't mentioned if you do or not) then for just practice I load 135 grain about 1/2 a grain light according to the reload book. They make the gun shoot like a 9mm(which I guess if you look at the specs it is about the same as the heavy 9mm load.) Very easy on the shooter, and for beginners. If you are worried about your carry accuracy, then you should definatly shoot hotter loads like your carry loads.

I like Georgia Arms/Master Cartridge 155gr FMJ for practice. I also carry 155gr Hydra Shoks and the recoil and POI have proven to be very close in past sessions. The Hydra Shoks always have an accuracy advantage over the Master Cartridge but the Ga Arms is very close in accuracy.

I have had very good experiances with Winchester USA 180gr ammo. Give it a shot, you can usually find it for about $165 oer thousand.
