What are the differences, if any, between FMJ (Full Metal Jacket) and TMJ (Total Metal Jacket) rounds? Obviously, Hollow Points are best for defense, but if only TMJ or FMJ are available, which would be best?

A full metal jacket usually has an exposed lead base. A total metal jacket is just that....totally encompasing tha lead core. I believe the design was intended for indoor ranges to reduce lead in the air.

With TMJ bullet, there's *no* lead visible anywhere on the bullet. An FMJ bullet may have exposed lead on the base. Of course, you're not going to be able to see the exposed base once the bullet is crimped into the case, so FMJ and TMJ cartridges will look the same.

Ballistically, I don't know that there's any big difference between FMJ and TMJ, all else being equal (bullet weight, profile, etcetera). The biggest difference is that TMJ rounds are less likely to cause lead vapor/particles to become airborne, which is a concern at some indoor ranges.

I recently bought a box of BEB winchester WinCLean. I believe the BEB stands for Brass Encased Bullet. They sound like the same thing being but these are marketed as being cleaner on your gun due to having no exposed lead. Now, I bought these because someone else was going to let me shoot their gun and I wanted to be a easy on it as possible since I don't know their cleaning habits. These were $30+/box of 50 so it isn't something I plan on shooting since I clean my gun everytime I use it and I can find regular WWB for around $16/50. I hadn't heard about them being less vaporous for indoor ranges.

Any bullet with more copper on it is a nicer round . Seems like the fit and finish is better too. Some ammo companies go so cheap on the actual bullet, it almost seems like they just threw a copper wash over the lead :(. Cost money though for the top shelf stuff .

I would definitely run TMJ rounds in a pinch for carry. Good stuff.

TMJ= is Speer's total metal jacket or copper plated bullet lineup. Yes, Gold Dots and TMJ bullets are electro-plated

FMJ & TMJ sucks for self-defense. Any hollowpoint would be a better choice

Its late and I've had many pabsts but I think tmj means truncated metal jacket. I've been wrong before though.

Well, I've been drinking the Turkey, and I recall it's TCFMJ.

truncated cone full metal jacket.:D Go to bed:eek:
