.40 Ranger SXT

I will soon be getting my hands on a box of 50 of 180gr. Ranger SXT loads (I'm not an LEO - yet). I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this load. Is it a good performer? Is there anyway I can test the performance of it (short of killin' jello)? Would firing it through a gallon container of water work (with something like a phone book behind it)?

Thankx in advance for any and all help/info y'all can provide.

FWIW...

According to a report I read on the testing of the newest 180gr Ranger "T" Talons (not same as Ranger SXT's or the old Black Talons)), they seem to be outperforming the top One Shot Stop (yeah, I know :o) .40 load, which is the 155gr Federal Hydra Shok.

The 180gr "LE" Ranger SXT's are good rounds, but the Ranger "T"s are supposedly top dawg in Winchester's, and possibly any other ammo line up.

On duty, I carry a G22 with 16 rounds of 155gr Hydra Shoks and two spare mags loaded with 180gr "LE" Ranger SXT's as back up. I plan to order some Ranger "T"s for back up when I cycle out my current stock of SXT's.

R6,

I too am skeptical about the OSS stuff. In your opinion, do you think this would be a good round to carry for defensive purposes? Or should I stick with commercially available ammo such as Gold Dots (in a carry ammo, I would like all the help, despite how 'minute' it may be, that I can get - eg cutting in addition to normal performance)? Also, can you educate me as to the difference between the Ranger SXT, and the "T's"?

Thanks for all your help.

R6,

You said "on duty." Where do you work if you don't mind my asking? So far, I've really enjoyed living in the city and plan on applying to Atlanta PD, Marietta, and possibly Fulton County. Let me know where you work and how you like it.

Thanx... & see ya May 20th,
Ben

In my opinion, the Federal 155gr Hydra Shok, which is available to anyone, is probably as good as anything else available. I base this on FBI test results as much as any data I have read. I tend to lean toward the rounds that penetrate deeper in the FBI gelatin tests.

In my honest opinion, shot placement/accuracy is first and foremost in the list of required elements of an effective defense shooting. If you can't put 'em where it counts, they won't count. I hold penetration as the second most important element. Barring a psychological response to being shot on the BG's part, you have to go deep enough to damage vital organs and cause sudden and massive blood loss or cause damage to the central nervous system/brain to effectively stop an attack. Again, if they don't go deep enough to count, they won't count.

Any additional tissue damage that *might* come from expanding projectiles or "blades/petals" is an added bonus, but it can't be depended on. I've seen some pretty dim reports regarding the percentage of times that expanding bullets fail to expand, which effectively means that you may as well be shooting FMJ.

The 155gr Federal Hydra Shoks are accurate from my G22.(requirement #1 met) The FBI tests also indicate that they penetrate sufficiently in gelatin, which theoretically translates to deeper tissue penetration. (#2 should be covered). Lastly, if/when the Hydra Shok does expand, they should be at least as effective as most any other JHP in the same weight and caliber.

Just my .02...

Oooops, I forgot the SXT vs. "T" question. I wish I knew the exact differences. However, I don't. The information that I have read claimed a revised jacket/scoring and a different (slower if I remember correctly, could be wrong though) rate of expansion. If I can find the article I read I will tell you more but basically I think the "T"s allegedly penetrate a little deeper than the SXT's due to slightly slower expansion. Anyone else seen this info? I hope I can find it again.

Read this page for some pretty good (IMO) info on defensive shooting.

Here's a page with info on the different Winchester "Black Talon" style loads. This isn't the article I was looking for though.
