Does anyone know if the .40 Magsafe Defender
+P+ is available to us non-leo/mil? Heck, as an 84 grain .40 at 1753/573, it sounds kind of fun! Just curious....

Why has no one responded yet ????

Sure, the MagSafe are very much available to the Average Joe. I have fired many, many rounds. Still have many packs sitting in the closet.

Try some local gun stores. Also, many of the online ammo supply sites carry Magsafe such as maybe Natchez.com, Midway, etc. Heck, you can even buy directly from Magsafe Company. By the way, you can order a video from the Magsafe Company that will show you live footage of MagSafe being fired into gel and comparing it to other brands of ammo. Excellent video, I have a copy. The video was made by the inventor of Magsafe. BTW, the inventor recently died doing what he loved -- riding his motorcycle.... Rest in Peace Joe.

G35...What do you think of them? How do they compare to other .40 rounds as far as effectiveness and accuracy? I would assume with their speed that they would be pretty darn accurate out of my H&K USP. I will go ahead and check around here to see if any of the local gun shops carry them. Thanks for the info....

JJCook,

What do you think of them?

I was a very big fan of the magsafes. I liked what I saw in the promo video. I liked what I saw in Street Stoppers Goat Test. But, as I became more intimate with the magsafe, I learned things that gradually changed my opinion. As I fired more and more of the magsafes, I started to notice more and more “flyers”. These were wild flyers. Some would be off by 4” from a 10 yrd distance. By the way, I shoot 2” groups (at my worst) from 10 yrds. It was very noticeable that these were flyers, and not me flinching. This would happen about one out of 20 shots. The reason for the flyers is because of imbalance of the slug. Bullets are very, very sensitive to imbalance. And, the magsafe are hand-made by arranging the BB pellets into the brass hull shell. Then, epoxy is poured into the hull. If you examine many magsafes with a strong light under a magnifying glass, you will notice irregularly placed BB periodically. I believe this is what produces the flyers.

The periodic flyers is not what caused me to stop using magsafes as my carry ammo. The reason that I stopped using magsafes for carry ammo is because I found something better. I now use ammo that I make (handloads). Please don’t misunderstand - - there is nothing wrong with magsafe (other than the flyers). It ranks among the best defense ammo. It is equal to Corbons. Although honestly, I do give the nod to Corbon. I like Corbon a little better because the magsafe are lacking in penetration. I am not a “penetration” freak. I am a high-velocity, high energy advocate. But, the magsafe are to shallow even for me. Plus, the destruction (temp cavity) is only equal to Corbon 135-gr .40cal ammo. How do I know??? Because I conducted my own ballistic gelatin test. Here is a web link to an article that I wrote that describes how you can conduct your own gel test if you wish.

To be honest with you, I recommend Corbon 135-gr .40 ammo instead of the magsafes. Just my opinion.

Please post again if you would like me to elaborate further on this topic. Also, let me know if you have problems purchasing magsafes. I will post addresses and phone numbers if you need them.

G35..

I fully appreciate all your input and opinions. It's nice to know that questions can be answered in their entirety, without being criticized for "lack of knowledge."
Thanks again!

G35:

The heat used to melt the lead core out of the bullet jackets used by MagSafe soft anneals the copper, which in turn allows high pressure propellant gases to deform the MagSafe bullet's heal and base. This is the most likely reason for MagSafe's inaccuracy.
