4 uses for handguns...what wins each

To me there are 4 categories for handgun uses and was wondering which you thought wins each one....revolver or autoloader?

1. Collecting (revolvers dominate)
2. Hunting (again revolvers)
3. Defense (can go either way...high cap. vs. less malfunction...i vote revolvers)
4. recreation (I will give this one to the autos)

3-1 Revolvers for me

1. Collecting (revolvers dominate)
2. Hunting (again revolvers)
3. Defense (can go either way...high cap. vs. less malfunction...i vote revolvers)
4. recreation (I will give this one to the autos)

1. There isn't much that can top an original Luger, or pristine 1911
Call it a draw.
2. Possibly, but I have as much confidence for close range deer hunting with my Glock G20 as I do my Super blackhawk. And for longer ranges, 100-150 yds. its my 35 Remington G2 Contender.
3. You left out thinner profile for better concealability of autoloaders.
4. Revolvers are as much fun as autoloaders.
I give it a tie to all 4 questions.

I think it's all ties except for the hunting category.

It's easier and cheaper to find a suitable revolver than a semi-auto.

#1 cant beat a 1911 so autos there
#2 blackhawk or redhawk wins
#3 the goes to the XD40 compact
#4 is the ruger mark III competition

so if your not hunting you better be packin a auto

literally six of each

1) I don't understand.

2) Hunt with Redhawks.

3) Defense tool choice determined by environment; I split the difference, and wear one of each (at least).

4) Both.

My clean winner? Both.

Number Five

5) Competition shooting: both. I use autos now for USPSA because I've been healing from strong-arm surgeries and them Redhawks are kinda heavy for a full day of five-stage 125rd min drawin' and gunnin' (notice I did not mention "runnin"? That's because "limpin' and gunnin'" sounds lame).

Okay, that one made me laugh. Tell me that ain't a good one....

6. Combat / Military - Not a use for the normal citizen, but for soldiers or LEO's the semi-auto wins easily.

Hunting - is the area where revolvers dominate...

Collecting .... I have about 24 revolvers(older S&W's) ...and about 24 semi-autos ( mostly 1911's, a few Sigs) ..with the most expensive guns being high end 1911's....so to me its a tossup.

Defense .... I rely on 1911's most of the time / but I can carry a K frame S&W revolver once in a while as well... but again its a tossup.

Recreation....again its a toss up / I enjoy shooting semi-autos and revolvers ...and I shoot both regularly ....

Collecting: None, I have no purpose for unused firearms.

Hunting: Neither.... T/C Encore, rifle capabilities in a handgun. Distance and power easily outweigh follow-up shot potential.

Defense: Semi-auto. Malfunctions are relatively irrelevant. You shouldn't carry a gun probe to malfunctions. My G33 has NEVER malfunctioned in nearly 1000 rounds. Reloads are faster, weight is lower, barrels are longer, cartridge choices are more.

Recreation: Depends. Revolvers are fun, but I see no recreational advantage. Semis are fun but again I don't see an "advantage", except maybe capacity. My Encore is fun too, but it's not "blast away at stuff" fun. If I had to choose, I guess I'd go semi-auto again.

So, I'm 1, leaning 2, for the semis, 1 for the Encore, 0 for revolvers and 1 for "none".

I consider myself a collector ...and I have about 50 handguns ...but I still shoot everything I own( even if it was new in box / when I got it ) ...I still shoot it - regardless of the value.

I may not shoot everything I own often ....but they all get to the range at least twice a year...

I don't have any use in my collection - for guns I won't shoot either ...

If you take good care of a gun / even though you shoot it ...it still retains a lot of its value in my opinion. I collect older S&W revolvers ( like model 19's, 27's, 29's etc ) ...and a variety of 1911's ...and I have some duplicates, especially in my revolvers ( where I have 3 model 19's / 4" ...but they were a good deal / and I'll pass a couple of them onto the boys / grandkids someday ) ...

I currently have move Semi-Auto's then revolvers, but my revolver collection is growing.

Hunting in pistol calibers I would give the more powerful rounds to revolvers.

recreational a tie

Self-defense and reliability a tie.

Military and Law enforcement I would give to Semi-Auto's

A plus to revolvers easier in the collecting of your brass for reloading.

So I would say that each has their strengths and weakness and shoot what you are comfortable with. :)

Gotta love those huge sweeping generalities....there's no wrong answer, and also, no right one, other than your own personal likes and dislikes.

When you look at all the makes and models, calibers and other variations, I don't honestly see how anyone can claim one better than the other for any specific use!

Revolvers (and single shots) have one thing virtually all autos cannot match, and that is identical function with any safe load. Auto pistols MUST have a certain level of energy or they will not function "automatically".

Talk about thickness/bulk, and its machts nichts, unless you specify which gun you are comparing. Compare a Chief's Special and a Desert Eagle, and tell me which one is flatter and has less bulk.

Fact is that no matter what category you choose, There is some auto that does the job easier than some revolver, and vice versa. ITs all about what you are comparing, specifically.

And Peetza, I do have a purpose for unused firearms...decoration!

Also serves as a reserve. If my go to gun is broken, in the shop geting customised, what ever, having something else around, doesn't hurt me one bit.

1. Collecting: Revolvers, 2. Hunting: Revolvers, 3. Defense: Auto-Loader, 4. Recreation: Auto-Loader. Defense Isn't really that great for revolvers, Besides it's Usual Larger Caliber. I would much rather have a Self-Loader. But i still love Revolvers. .500S&W:D

I have the correct answer!

1. 50/50 - Luger, SAA, rare HTHSRGFD.....whatever....it depends on many other factors....action type usually matters little if it all RARITY, CONDITION, DEMAND are what actually matter.
2. 50/50 - there are many great big bore semi autos. I would think a wildey 475 magnum could kill just about anything but I know a 500 S&W has more energy.
3. 50/50 - some prefer the feel of one or the other, caliber, capacity, dependability, brand, etc
4. 50/50 - revolvers are cool and easier for me to shoot but certain autos are fun

How can anyone say anything other than all are 50/50?

Exactly right...that is what make gun forums so fun for me...a chance to compare personal likes and dislikes......I can always ignore the fact that everyone but me is always wrong;):p

1. I'm not a collecgtor. No opinion.
2. I hunt with both. A big bore revolver is great for bigger stuff, and a .22 semi-auto works great for small game. While I use a revolver more often for hunting, I've nothing against a semi-auto in the proper application.
3. Again, I use either one.
4. I can have just as much fun with a SA revolver as any semi-auto.

I actually prefer shooting revolvers, but either one works pretty well for most uses.

Collection has a few more s-a pistols than revolvers. Hunting with rimfire pistol, .357 & .44 Automag and my old Ruger SBH. SD currently handled by s-a pistols. Fun shoots mostly with the s-a irons. None of the shooting I do is a waste of money. It improves my skills and helps me unwind.

1. Collecting - I must justify all firearms purchases, in regards to intended use and real purpose. This concept is not familiar. ;) Even if I had "never fired, in original presentation case, Himmler's personal Luger"... I'd shoot it, and carry it. :D

2. Hunting - Revolvers... but I would not hesitate to use a good auto in 10mm or .400 CorBon for most big game species I hunt; and a .22 auto is great for small game.

3. Defense - Primaries are semi-autos, but a planned DA revolver purchase will bump one.

4. Recreation - Revolvers

Throwing out #1...
Revolvers win, considering what I currently own.
It's 50/50 considering planned purchases.
