4" S&W 500 Scope Mount

I'm looking to put a red dot sight on my 4" 500. I'd like to know what base I need to get to mount it. I'm going to try a cheap red dot to see if it lasts more than a couple of rounds. Also, can I put this (the base) on myself or do I need to take it to a gunsmith? Thank you for any info on this.

There have been several topics lately about scoping the X-frame, and there seems to be a universal problem with keeping the screws tight. You will have no problem with putting on the mount yourself, but some are now being made that use 4 screws instead of 3, which will require a fourth hole to be drilled and tapped. I used a Weigand mount and a 2x Leupold on my four incher, and finally used a two part epoxy to bed the mount to the topstrap to keep the screws from loosening. My 8 3/8 version has the same setup, but with a 4x Leupold and I've never had a problem with it, so so far, no epoxy.

Take a look at the www.jackweigand.com mount. Uses the 3 factory holes and has a recoil lug at the back.

Sorta like this:

While certainly not a 500, this one has been mounted for 4 years and many thousands of rounds, with no problems.

Good Luck...

Thanks guys, that is the base I am looking for. Jbar, could you explain the epoxy bed thing a little more in detail? Do you use the epoxy instead of loctite? Thanks again for the info.

I couldn't keep the screws from coming loose, so I used JB Weld and actually glued the durn thing to the top strap! I didn't use it on the screws, because I may want to remove it someday. I used red loctite on them instead. If I ever want to remove the mount, a slight application of heat will break it free, or I can sacrifice the $20 mount, and I can figure some way to remove the rest of the residue from the frame without damaging the finish... I hope. :p The way the screws come loose and the rear of the mount gets peened against the back of the frame, I'm leary of using a steel mount for fear that such peening would also cause damage to the frame if the screws loosened up.
HERE'S at FFF with a little more info and some pics.
