4" Nickel S&W M&P ammo question

Hello again. I recently picked up a 4" nickel S&W M&P .38 sp. The serial number is 450xxx. From searching various forums, I'd place it in the early 20s, correct? It's in pretty good shape and I can't wait to shoot it. I read that it's best to not shoot jacketed ammo, so I got some PMC lead round noses. Is a 158gr LRN at 820 fps OK to put through the gun? I wan't to put the gun under as little stress as possible while still shooting it.

That should be a perfectly good load for it. It's about factory nominal.
Some of the earliest .38 special factory loads used cupro-nickle jacketed round nose bullets. Given the age of the revolver, it would be a good idea to avoid the +P loads which takes in most of the jacketed hollowpoint rounds.

Not a great handicap

One point in cleaning. Never use Hopes #9 or othher ammonia containing cleanes or bore cleaners. I suggest Birchwood Casey Gunscrubber or brake parts cleaner. I also suggest Flitz for polishing the nickle. www.flitz.com

Thanks for the replies. Now I just gotta wait until I can get to the range. Thanks also for the cleaning tip. This is my first nickeled gun and I wouldn't want to ruin the finish.

Another couple of questions: How do I tackle the problem of some slight pitting? Would a brass brush be OK? There is a spot or two where the nickel was chipped, revealing a dark discoloration. Is there anything I can do to polish or buff out these dark spots? Is RemOil with teflon lubricant a good oil for the nickel? Since the humidity here is always around 100%, I'd like to be a little extra careful.

Thanks again.
