4-H Rifle instruction

I have been asked to consider taking over a leader position with the local 4-H rifle club. Is there anyone here in this sort of position? I need more info, and I don't even belong to the 4-H, but I was flattered that I was asked. Any feedback?

And if you hear from my Louise, won't you tell her I love her so?

I did not know that 4H had a rifle club. That's great. If at all possible I would support them. New shooters are the backbone of this country. Also I grew up with 4H from the farmer side. They have some really good programs. But having said that they are only as good and meaningful as the instructors.

Tatters,

Our county is trying to get a shooting/archery program started (it's in the very early stages) and I'm expecting to get volunteered to help with it. I've been talking with an advisor from a neighboring county who seems to have his act together. If you want to take this offline and e-mail me your info I'll see if he would give you a call. Where in IN are you? We are over in N. KY.

I was a 4-H coach back several years ago, we had a very serious shooting program here, Olympic style shooting with 22 target rifles. I had to get a NRA coach certification which involved a 2 day school. It was fun and a lot of hard work.
One of the best things about the program was it taught gun saftey to the young folks that they will remember for life.
If you have a chance to be a 4-H shooting coach, go for it..good luck.

tatters,
Congratulations, in this day and age of anti gun feelings the idea of starting or keeping a 4H shooting program going is great news. I did it myself back in the early 60's and it was a true learning experience. Teaching kids to shoot and doing it safely, and accuratley is a challenge that I'm sure you are up to. If you dont take the challenge, this program could die in your area, and a group of kids will be for ever lacking a life experience. I say go for it COACH.

Congratulations! I hope you accept this opportunity.

We just picked up a Marlin 15YN youth rifle, for use tomorrow in the '50 million round march'. It's a very capable, single-shot, bolt action .22 rimfire. Looks to be very well made, and I hear it is often used in 4H programs.

You'd be doing a wonderful thing if you helped kids this way. Good luck.

We have an active 4-H shooting program here in our small town. One local girl was invited to compete in the USA Shooting National Championships in precision air rifle, which will be held in Atlanta in June. This is the second and final Olympic team selection match. Her dad must have started her out right. He is the coach here. She will be a sophomore at UNL this fall and is on the rifle team there. If she does well at this shoot, she will be asked to join the Olympic development program and compete in the World Cup, and Pan-American Games, and then the next Olympics.
Who knows, maybe someday it will be one of the kids you help get started.
