4.4 inch barrel:.40 or .45?

Which caliber will give the best performance/expansion out of a 4.4 inch barrel. I heard that the .45 needs all 5 inches for optimum performance. Thanks!

Gimme that big, slow bullet--as somebody once said, the best thing about a .45 is that they come "Pre-Expanded".

Regardless of the length of barrel (and 4.4 inches is at least an inch LONGER than what I'd consider a minimum length for a .45), the bullet cuts a path that STARTS OUT a half inch wide whether the hollow point expands or not.

4.4 inches "not long enough for a .45"? A lotta dead bad guys are laughing in their graves at that one...
